In a display of early dominance, Mamelodi Sundowns launched their Betway Premiership title defence with a decisive 2-0 victory over Tshwane rivals SuperSport United at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Tuesday night.
Sundowns’ Dominance
The Brazilians, as they are fondly known, dictated the pace of the game from the start. Their first-half performance, while filled with missed opportunities, showcased their attacking prowess. Coach Manqoba Mngqithi’s tactical acumen was evident when he brought on Themba Zwane at the start of the second half, a move that proved to be the catalyst for Sundowns’ triumph.
Zwane Sparks the Attack
Zwane, known for his playmaking abilities, wasted no time making his mark. In the 62nd minute, he delivered a sublime pass to Iqraam Rayners, who slotted the ball home with clinical precision. Just three minutes later, Ribeiro pounced on a defensive error to extend Sundowns’ lead, sending the home crowd into raptures.
SuperSport’s Late Surge
Despite trailing by two goals, SuperSport United refused to go down without a fight. They launched a series of attacks in the closing stages, with Gape Moralo, Pogiso Sanoka, and Thabang Mahlangu coming close to scoring. However, Sundowns’ goalkeeper Ronwen Williams was in inspired form, thwarting their efforts with a string of impressive saves.
Betway Premiership: The Road Ahead
This victory sends a clear message to the rest of the league – Sundowns are hungry for another title. They currently sit atop the table on goal difference and will look to carry this momentum into their CAF Champions League encounter against Eswatini’s Mbabane Swallows on Saturday.
For SuperSport United, this is a disappointing start to the season. However, they have an opportunity to redeem themselves when they host Royal AM on Saturday. Coach Gavin Hunt will be looking for a much-improved performance from his team in their next outing.
