The Netherlands are back in the business end of a major tournament. After years of falling short, the Dutch national team delivered their most convincing performance of Euro 2024 with a 3-0 victory over Romania, securing their place in the quarterfinals for the first time in 16 years.
Netherlands vs Romania: Gakpo Starts the Rout
The Dutch dominated from the opening whistle, and their pressure paid off in the 20th minute. Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo, who has been in top form throughout the tournament, found the back of the net to put the Netherlands ahead. Romania, who surprised many by topping their group stage showing, struggled to create clear opportunities against a resolute Dutch defence marshalled by the evergreen Virgil van Dijk.
Malen Makes His Mark
The second half saw the Netherlands continue to control possession, with Memphis Depay threatening on several occasions. A Video Assistant Referee (VAR) intervention disallowed a second Dutch goal for offside, but substitute Donyell Malen ensured a comfortable win with a brace in the final minutes. Malen’s first, a close-range finish set up by Gakpo, sealed the game in the 83rd minute. He then added a solo effort deep into injury time to put the icing on the cake for the Dutch.
Dutch Rediscover Winning Touch
This victory is a significant moment for Dutch football. The team has endured a string of disappointing results in recent major tournaments, failing to progress beyond the group stage at the last two Euros. Manager Ronald Koeman will be buoyed by his team’s performance, particularly their defensive solidity and attacking efficiency.
The Netherlands will now face Turkey in the quarterfinals, with a place in the semi-finals and a chance to end their long wait for international glory up for grabs. Romania, meanwhile, can be proud of their unexpected run to the knockout stages, but their European adventure comes to an end.
