The T20 World Cup saw South Africa secure an 18-run victory over a determined United States side in a thrilling cricket encounter at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua on Wednesday. This win keeps their perfect record intact in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.
South Africa Bat First, Powered by Openers
Electing to bat first, the Proteas got off to a flying start thanks to a solid opening partnership between Quinton de Kock and Aiden Markram. De Kock, in particular, was in devastating touch, scoring a brilliant 74 runs. Markram chipped in with a valuable 46, laying a strong foundation for the middle order. Despite losing wickets at regular intervals, the Proteas managed to post a competitive total of 194 runs on the board, with contributions from David Miller and Heinrich Klaasen.
US Fightback But Fall Short in T20 World Cup
The United States bowlers displayed commendable grit, with pacer Nosthush Kenjige and spinner Saurabh Netravalkar picking up two wickets each. However, in response, the US batting lineup showcased their determination. Wicket-keeper batsman Andries Gous led the charge with an unbeaten knock of 80 runs, while Harmeet Singh provided valuable support with a brisk 38.
Rabada Steers South Africa Home
Despite the valiant efforts of Gous and Singh, the US batting faltered at crucial junctures. South Africa’s pace spearhead Kagiso Rabada proved too hot to handle, claiming three crucial wickets for just 27 runs in his four overs. Anrich Nortje and Tabraiz Shamsi also chipped in with wickets, restricting the US to a final score of 176 runs.
De Kock Deservedly Named Player of the Match
For his match-winning knock, Quinton de Kock was adjudged the Player of the Match. This victory keeps South Africa’s unbeaten run in the tournament alive, while the US can take heart from their spirited performance against a strong opponent.
