A Glance at the Current North West Election Results
As the 2024 South African election results continue to pour in, it is becoming apparent that the political arena in the North West province is beginning to show definite shifts and trends that are starting to redefine and shape the future of local governance. Voters are eagerly awaiting to see how the major parties, which include the African National Congress (ANC), Democratic Alliance (DA), and Economic Freedom Fighters(EFF) are doing.
African National Congress (ANC)
ANC, which for long been the party of the order in North West, still retains a considerable share of the votes. However, it has registered a reduction in its support while compared to earlier elections. Blame can be apportioned to the increased internal factionalism, corruption scandals, and poor delivery of services that the public is not happy with. From the latest counting, ANC has garnered an average of 58.4% votes from North West. This is a high loss from what they’ve been getting in the previous elections of over 60%.
Democratic Alliance (DA)
The new entrance by the Democratic Alliance (DA) in North West has taken an opportunity to cash in on the weakening grip of the ANC; its preoccupation shifted to that of good governance, anti-corruption, and service delivery. The DA’s share decreasing to about 13.3% from 18% in the last election.
Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF)
Still rumbling with their radical economic policies with colorful rhetoric; the EFF is slowly growing in power in the North West. In percentages, the party has been able to sustain a steady support trend since its formation at about 15%. This approach has made the EFF, with its vital core measuring at 19.1%, the party with the largest following among several voters, mostly the youth and other voiceless communities. Not much of a surge in overall percentage, but consistency spells a solidified core constituency.

Other Parties
The smaller parties include the Freedom Front Plus (FFP), Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), and others, but their impact is hardly comparable to that of the big three. The FFP has faired slightly better, having received 7.1% of the votes, a marginal increase compared to previous elections. The much-hyped issues of minority rights and local governance of this party have found good reception by a few hardcore sections in the North West.
Decisive Factor Voter Turnout and Trends
Voter turnout in the North West is a decisive factor in this election. Early indications are that the turnout rate is around 54.22%, just slightly higher than the national average. This increase in participation will, on its face, send more signals of an electorate interested in change and more active in determining their political destiny.
Next, the Implications of these Results on Future Outlook
The results of the 2024 elections in the North West give a possibility of a realignment of political power. While the ANC remains the hegemonic party, it has been compelled at an increasing pace to be competitive because of its internal problems and public dissatisfaction to return to its previous position of dominance. Meanwhile, the DA and EFF have, over the years, been slowly moving and growing their base of influence. This professes an increasingly competitive and dynamic political landscape in the province. The performance of these parties will now set the policy directions and governance of the province.
