Gauteng Launches Massive R8.4 Billion Job Creation Initiative
In an ambitious move to combat the escalating unemployment crisis, the Department of Employment and Labour, in collaboration with its entity, the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF), has unveiled a significant partnership. This collaboration with the private sector, Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs), and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) aims to create thousands of job opportunities across Gauteng. This initiative revealed during the launch of labour activation programmes for Gauteng, signals a major step forward in addressing the region’s employment challenges.
Strategic Partnerships for Employment Creation
At the heart of this initiative is the strategic partnership between the Department of Employment and Labour and various stakeholders including private businesses, SETAs, and NGOs. The launch event, held on a promising Saturday, marked the beginning of a concerted effort to tackle unemployment head-on. Employment and Labour Minister Thulas Nxesi announced that an impressive R8.4 billion has been allocated to implement 105 labour activation programmes across 22 key sectors such as agriculture, IT, construction, and many more in Gauteng.
A Nationwide Effort to Combat Unemployment
The Gauteng launch is a pivotal part of a larger, R23.8 billion national job creation plan. This comprehensive strategy aims to create over 700,000 employment opportunities across South Africa in the coming weeks. With programme durations set between 12 to 36 months, the initiative is focused on not only creating jobs but also ensuring they provide a stable source of income for many South Africans.
Unified Approach to Employment by the Department of Employment and Labour
Minister Nxesi, in his keynote address, stressed the importance of a collective response to the unemployment crisis. The initiative underscores the government’s role in working alongside all stakeholders to foster employment, economic growth, and development. Participants for the labour activation programmes will be chosen through the Department of Employment and Labour’s Employment Services of South Africa database (ESSA), ensuring a fair and transparent selection process.
