Amakhosi is already preparing to wield the axe and clear their dead wood at Naturena and reports suggest a Kaizer Chiefs midfielder is on his way out. According to a local football publication, Siyethemba Sithebe is set to leave Chiefs at the end of the season.
Sithebe is deemed surplus to requirements and Phakaaathi reports that he is prone to injury and Chiefs are set to part ways with him. The 31-year-old dreadlocked midfielder has failed to impress at Chiefs and his contract will not be renewed at the end of June.
Kaizer Chiefs to Release Midfielder Sithebe – Report
Looking at the former AmaZulu star’s contribution to Chiefs, Sithebe made 28 appearances in all competitions for Amakhosi in 2022/23 DStv Premiership campaign. However, the gifted midfielder boasts only one appearance for the Soweto giants this season owing to a series of injuries.
“At his age, Sithebe should be playing week in and week out at Chiefs, but this injury has made it difficult for him to compete this season. And to make things worse, the club can’t open talks with him over a new contract,” said the source to the publication.
“The club has also brought in some good players in his position and there are also young players like Samkelo (Zwane) and Lehlogonolo (Matlou) competing with him in that central midfield position, so things don’t look for Sithebe insofar as his future with Chiefs is concerned.”
Kaizer Chiefs Midfielder Heading Back to Durban?
The same publication reports that the Bafana Bafana star could be heading back to AmaZulu, where he played for five years between 2017 and 2022. But moving back to Usuthu could be tricky for the former Chiefs midfielder, having left the club under a cloud of controversy in 2022. After signing a pre-contract with the Joburg-based side, Sithebe was frozen out of the first team as the bosses were unhappy with the decision.
Meanwhile, Chiefs are now turning their focus to the league this weekend and traveling to Cape Town for a date with Cape Town City.
Kaizer Chiefs: City Keeper Issues a Strong Warning to Amakhosi
The Citizens gloveman, Darren Keet warns their visitors they will come back to Johannesburg empty-handed. The third meeting between the two sides comes on the back of a loss for City in the MTN8 quarter-finals, but Eric Tinkler’s men claimed a win in the league.
“Well definitely. But we’re not going to tell you what it is,” Keet told iDiski Times.
“We’ve been working hard for the last two weeks, and heading into this week, so we’re grinding away but we’ve got things in mind of what needs to be done. Obviously, you know in previous games they got ahead of us in the cup in the MTN8 and now it’s time to make sure we get the double on them in the league. So that’s definitely what we’re going for, and it doesn’t matter who we come up against, we approach the game in the same way, and this one’s no different.”
Coached by interim boss, Cavin Johnson, Chiefs sit seventh on the log table while the Mother City-based side occupies the fifth spot. Looking at the two sides’ statistics, City have a good recent league record against Chiefs, they have five wins out of their last six clashes.
