South African coach Pitso Mosimane is set to receive a prestigious honorary degree from the University of Johannesburg. Currently based in Saudi Arabia, Mosimane remains one of the most successful coaches in the South African football space. The former Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly mentor is heavily linked with the vacant coaching job at Kaizer Chiefs.
In a statement, UJ says Mosimane is the biggest achiever and deserves an honour from the Johannesburg-based institution.
Mosimane: Pitso to Receive Massive Recognition From UJ
Looking at his coaching career with Sundowns, Mosimane is credited for changing the club’s fortunes and turning it into a winning machine. In his overall career, the 59-year-old Mosimane boasts 19 trophies in his illustrious coaching career. “Mr Pitso Mosimane has achieved notable success as a football player and national and international coach,” reads a statement by UJ.
“He won the South African Football Association Coach of the Year Award, was awarded the PSL Coach of the Season Award on five occasions, and was named the CAF Coach of the Year in 2016. Such accomplishments demonstrate his exceptional leadership, strategic acumen, and ability to motivate and inspire a team to perform at the highest level.”
“Mr. Mosimane has been vocal about the potential and quality of African football and has consistently advocated for African players to receive equal opportunities and recognition in global football. His outspokenness has helped shed light on the talent pool in Africa and the need for increased investment and development in the continent’s football infrastructure. He continues to excel in this avenue with the development of the Pitso Mosimane Soccer Schools.”
“Mosimane’s success has broken barriers and shattered stereotypes, demonstrating that African coaches and players can excel at the highest levels of the game. The ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, July 25th, at 16:30.”
Mosimane: UJ on Pitso’s Honorary Degree
The former Bafana Bafana coach who has three CAF Champions League gold medals, Mosimane is honoured for his role in the world of football. At the same time, the higher education institution says it’s important to give out such degrees.
“An Honorary Doctorate serves as recognition for individuals who have made substantial contributions to a particular field or has offered exceptional service to society, closely aligning with the University’s vision, mission, values, and strategic objectives,” said Professor Bettine van Vuuren.
Meanwhile, this publication reported that Mosimane could make his return to the DStv Premiership and coach Chiefs. This comes after his agent and wife, Moira Tlhagale said they are already talking to a few clubs and this comes as Amakhosi is looking to hire Molefi Ntseki’s successor. As things stand, Chiefs have Cavin Johnson as interim coach and are looking to return to glory as they are on the verge of finishing nine seasons without a win.
“Because we know we only have four months at Abha, I have already started talking to other teams, which I cannot tell you now, but we are just starting to build opportunities if Abha does not work,” Tlhagale said. “They wanted to make it an 18-month contract, but for us, it was just that. From my side in the negotiations, we were not happy with next year’s amount, understanding what the market is about.”
