This 24-Month Internships Program commencing in July 2024 is an opportunity for graduates to engage deeply with the trade, industry, and competition sectors, fostering both personal and professional development.

  • Stipend: Starting from R7,043.31 per month, based on qualification level

The Department of Trade, Industry, and Competition (DTIC) is a pivotal player in South Africa’s economic landscape, striving to foster a dynamic, globally competitive economy characterized by sustainable development, inclusive growth, and equitable employment opportunities. Through its initiatives, the DTIC seeks to promote innovation, industrial development, and international competitiveness, creating a nurturing environment for professionals and businesses alike.

Roles Available

The DTIC seeks motivated South African graduates (aged 18-35) with tertiary qualifications (NQF level 6 and above) in various fields, including but not limited to:

  • Public Management / Public Administration
  • Business Science / Business Management / Business Administration
  • Communication / Public Relations / Marketing
  • Law
  • Data Science / Information Management / Computer Science
  • Economics
  • Statistics / Econometrics
  • Agricultural Economics
  • Development Studies
  • Accounting / Financial Management / Cost and Management Accounting
  • Risk Management
  • Internal Auditing / Auditing
  • Natural Science / Chemistry / Biology / Mechanical Engineering / Nuclear Engineering / Nuclear Physics

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must possess a tertiary qualification (NQF level 6 and above) in one of the specified fields. A strong academic record and relevant skills enhance candidacy.

Key Responsibilities

Interns participating in the 24-Month Internship Program at DTIC will be entrusted with a range of responsibilities, including but not limited to:

  • Assisting with Research and Analysis: Conducting research and analysis on trade, industry, and competition policies and trends, contributing to the development of policy recommendations and strategic planning.
  • Project Management Support: Supporting the planning, execution, and monitoring of DTIC’s projects. This includes coordinating with different stakeholders, preparing project documentation, and assisting in the evaluation of project outcomes.
  • Data Collection and Reporting: Gathering, analyzing, and presenting data relevant to DTIC’s fields of operation. Interns will learn to use various data analysis tools and techniques, contributing to reports that inform decision-making processes.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Assisting in the organization and facilitation of stakeholder meetings, workshops, and conferences. This includes preparing presentation materials, engaging with participants, and contributing to the synthesis of outcomes.
  • Communications and Marketing: Supporting the communications team in developing and implementing marketing strategies. Tasks may include content creation, social media management, and public relations activities.
  • Legal and Regulatory Support: For interns in legal and related fields, responsibilities may include assisting in the review and analysis of legal documents, regulations, and policies affecting trade, industry, and competition.
  • Technical Assistance: Providing technical support within specific areas of expertise, such as information technology, engineering, or finance, contributing to the operational efficiency and effectiveness of DTIC.
  • Learning and Development Activities: Participating in workshops, seminars, and training sessions organized by DTIC to enhance professional skills and knowledge.
  • Innovation and Creativity: Encouraging interns to propose innovative solutions to challenges faced by the department, fostering a culture of creativity and continuous improvement.

Skills Required

Interns at the DTIC are expected to possess a blend of technical skills, soft skills, and personal qualities that will enable them to contribute effectively to their roles and the broader objectives of the DTIC. These include:

  • Analytical Thinking: The ability to analyze information critically and make reasoned judgments. This involves evaluating data from various sources, identifying patterns, and drawing logical conclusions to inform decision-making.
  • Professionalism: Demonstrating a high level of professionalism in all aspects of work. This includes maintaining confidentiality, adhering to ethical standards, and presenting oneself in a manner that reflects positively on the DTIC.
  • Adaptability: Being flexible and open to change. Interns should be able to adjust to new challenges, work environments, and evolving project requirements with ease.
  • Eagerness to Learn: A proactive attitude towards learning and personal development. Interns should actively seek opportunities to gain new skills, expand their knowledge, and take on challenging assignments.
  • Understanding of Government Systems: A basic understanding of how government departments and agencies operate, including familiarity with public sector policies, procedures, and regulatory frameworks.
