Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos reveals why he wanted to quit the national team coaching job amid offers from European clubs. Broos recently guided Bafana to a third spot at the Afcon tournament in Ivory Coast and days after, he received several offers.
The Belgian mentor, Broos states that there were some of the elements he didn’t like in South Africa, and that nearly pushed him to quit. According to various media reports, several overseas clubs such as Club Brugge in Belgium want the former Cameroon coach.
The 71-year-old Broos reveals all of this while back at home with Belgian media in a podcast, saying he told SAFA president Dr. Danny Jordaan he wanted to quit his job. Moreover, Broos has always wanted to meet with fellow DStv Premiership/PSL coaches but to no avail.
Bafana Coach Hugo Broos on Why He Nearly Quit
The controversial Bafana coach, Broos recently met with Jordaan and decided to continue in his role as coach. While he has reportedly received offers from unnamed African countries after impressing at the Afcon showpiece, Broos rubbished the reports as speculation.
“There were lots of rumours after AFCON, there were a lot of countries who were interested and are maybe still interested,” he said on SABC1.

“But again I told the president that I’ll stay in South Africa and I’ll stay in South Africa. I don’t see me changing again, building again. I have something here, I know what I have here. I love the life here. Why should I go on another adventure? I love everything except some things, but it can’t be perfect. I said because there were some things that were a problem for me.”
Broos Opens Up on Why He Wanted to Quit Bafana
The seasoned coach and former Belgian defender, Broos added that he wanted to be with his family as he was away for months.
“First of all my family, I was always two months, two-and-a-half months here without them and it was heavy in the end. So that had to change and it will change,” added the Bafana coach, Broos. I had a meeting with the president Mr. Jordaan and we talked about it and he understood it. He said ‘ok, there is no problem, if you want to go him and see your family, go take the flight’.”

Broos on Issues With PSL Coaches
The outspoken mentor continued to say there are issues with PSL coaches who are reluctant to meet with him and discuss the national team. As things stand, it’s only coach Gavin Hunt of SuperSport United who has since met the coach, Hunt praised the 2017 Afcon winner with the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon.
“But there is also the bad relationship with PSL. Also there, if everything goes ok I will meet the chairman of the PSL, Mr. Khoza and I will talk to him,” continued the coach. “I can express my ideas about some things and I hope he understands me.
“And then yeah, you did a good AFCON and at a certain age you’re thinking about the end of your career, it’s normal. It’s not more than that. AFCON is done, I had a very good meeting with Mr. Jordaan, and the problems are solved. I hope now that I’ll get a little more credit from some people here in this country.”
