In a concerning development, Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officials have conducted 172 motorist arrests of those driving under the influence of alcohol. These arrests, made over a single week in February 2024, underscore the severity of South Africa’s ongoing battle against drunk driving.

A Deadly Problem

Driving under the influence of alcohol is a reckless and dangerous act that puts not only the driver’s life at risk but also the lives of countless other road users. Drunk driving significantly impairs judgment, reaction time, and coordination – all crucial skills for safe driving.  The consequences of this reckless behaviour can be devastating, leading to severe accidents, injuries, and even fatalities.

JMPD’s Commitment to Zero Tolerance: 172 Motorist Arrests

The JMPD has expressed deep concern over these arrests, reiterating their zero-tolerance policy towards drunk driving. Superintendent Xolani, a spokesperson for the JMPD, emphasized that those caught driving under the influence will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. The department is committed to maintaining road safety throughout Johannesburg.

A Call for Responsibility

These arrests serve as a stark reminder of the importance of responsible behaviour on the roads. The JMPD urges all motorists to make the right choices and never get behind the wheel after consuming alcohol. There are numerous alternatives available, including public transport, e-hailing services, or the simple act of designating a sober driver.

The Road to Safety: A Collaborative Effort

While the JMPD is actively combating drunk driving through arrests and enforcement, the issue requires a broader societal shift.  Public awareness campaigns, education about the dangers of drunk driving, and stricter regulations could all play a role in making South Africa’s roads safer.

Let’s Make Our Roads Safer

The 172 arrests highlight a troubling trend and a clear need for immediate action. It’s a call to arms for every South African to prioritise road safety and make responsible choices.

Here Are Some Crucial Safe Driving Tips Everyone Should Follow:

Minimise Distractions

  • Put the phone down: Texting, talking, or using apps while driving is incredibly dangerous. Put your phone on silent or use a hands-free mode only if necessary.
  • Focus on the road: Avoid eating, adjusting the radio, or engaging in deep conversations that divert your attention.

Obey Traffic Rules

  • Speed limits exist for a reason:  Driving too fast reduces your reaction time and increases the severity of potential accidents.
  • Signal your intentions: Use turn signals well in advance to communicate with other drivers.
  • Respect right-of-way and traffic signs: Stop at red lights, yield when necessary, and observe pedestrian crossings.

Be a Defensive Driver

  • Anticipate potential hazards: Maintain a safe following distance, be aware of blind spots, and scan the road for potential problems.
  • Don’t assume other drivers are paying attention: Assume others might make mistakes and be prepared to react accordingly.
  • Adjust driving to weather conditions: Slow down and increase your following distance in rain, snow, or fog.

Take Care of Yourself and Your Vehicle

  • Buckle up: Seat belts dramatically reduce the risk of serious injuries or death in an accident.
  • Don’t drive drowsy: If you’re tired, pull over and rest or let someone else take the wheel.
  • Ensure vehicle maintenance: Check tires, lights, brakes, and fluid levels regularly. A well-maintained car is crucial for safe operation.

Additional Tips

  • Never drink and drive: Even a small amount of alcohol impairs your judgment.
  • Be extra cautious at night or in poor visibility conditions.
  • Take regular breaks on long journeys.

Remember, road safety is everyone’s responsibility. By following these tips, you can protect yourself and others on the road.
