[Johannesburg, 21 February 2024] – South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa has officially announced the date for the 2024 National and Provincial Elections. They will be held on Wednesday, May 29th, 2024. This historic election marks the first time independent candidates will be able to contest for seats at both the national and provincial levels.

In his address, President Ramaphosa highlighted the importance of these elections, stating, “These elections are a defining moment in our democracy. It’s a chance for every South African to shape the future they desire.”

Date for the 2024 National and Provincial Elections – Key Things to Consider

Key Points for Voters:

  • Voter Registration: The final voter registration weekend was held on February 3rd and 4th, 2024.  To check your voter registration status, visit the Electoral Commission’s website here.
  • Election Day:  Polls will be open nationwide on May 29th, 2024.
  • Special Voting: Provisions for special voting (for those unable to vote on election day) will be made available before May 29th.
  • Election Resources: The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) is the primary source for all official information on the 2024 elections: https://www.elections.org.za/pw/

The President encouraged all eligible voters to exercise their democratic rights and participate in this pivotal election.

Key Changes Since the Last Election:

Independent Candidates: This is the first national and provincial election where independent candidates can run for seats.

Amendments to the Electoral Act: The Electricity Regulation Amendment Bill was tabled in 2023. The Act aims to effect amendments to the Electricity Regulation Act of 2006, to:

  • Improve the administration of the Act.
  • Make provision for additional electricity, new generation capacity, and electricity infrastructure.
  • Make provision for the establishment, duties, powers, and functions of the Transmission System Operator SOC Ltd.

Political Landscape: More than 350 political parties have joined the race for the upcoming 2024 elections, with 30 having registered with the Independent Electoral Commission in the last quarter of 2023.

Voter Registration Drives: Ongoing efforts by the IEC to expand voter registration and outreach, especially focusing on any initiatives to target youth enrolment or previously underrepresented communities.

Key Advice to Help You Prepare for the Upcoming 2024 Elections:

1. Verify Your Registration:

  • The Basics: Double-check that you are registered to vote at your current address. This ensures you’re on the voters’ roll for the correct voting station.
  • How to Check: Visit the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) website https://www.elections.org.za/pw/Voter/How-To-Vote or send an SMS with your ID number to 32810 (charged at R1). You can also contact your local IEC office.

2. Get Informed about the Candidates and Parties:

  • Do Your Research: Learn about the various parties running in the elections. Explore their manifestos and policy positions and understand their stances on issues that matter to you.
  • Consider Independent Candidates:  Research the independent candidates in your constituency and understand what they are running for.
  • Sources: Utilise reliable news sources, official party/candidate websites, and the IEC website for information.

3. Understand the Voting Process:

  • Familiarise Yourself: Visit the IEC website: https://www.elections.org.za/pw/Elections-And-Results/Voting-Process to learn how the voting process works, what to expect at the voting station, and your rights as a voter.
  • Know Where to Vote: Confirm the location of your voting station.
  • Special Voting: If you are unable to vote on election day, check the IEC website to learn about options for special voting.

4. Plan for Election Day:

  • Know Your Schedule: Make sure you have time on election day to go to the polls. Remember, voting stations are open for extended hours.
  • Bring Your ID: You must have your green, bar-coded ID book, smart ID card, or a valid temporary identification certificate to vote.

5. Encourage Others to Participate:

  • Spread the Word: The success of an election depends on voter turnout. Remind friends, family, and colleagues to register and vote. Share resources and information.
  • Volunteer: Consider volunteering as a poll worker or party representative.

Additional Tips:

  • Critical Thinking: Evaluate information sources carefully. Be wary of misinformation or disinformation campaigns.
  • Reflect on your Values: Vote in alignment with the issues that are important to you.
