The Senzo Meyiwa murder case, a saga that has gripped the nation for years, has recently seen significant developments, with new twists and turns emerging. Central to these developments is the figure of Kelly Khumalo, a renowned South African singer, and the girlfriend of the late Senzo Meyiwa at the time of his tragic demise.
The case has been shrouded in uncertainty, with five men accused of Meyiwa’s murder (Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya, Bongani Ntanzi, Mthobisi Mncube, Mthokoziseni Maphisa, and Sifisokuhle Nkani Ntuli) and six others present in October 2014 at Khumalo’s mother’s residence where the shooting took place.
Allegations and Denials: The R3 Million Offer
In proceedings at the Pretoria High Court on Wednesday the 24th of January, a shocking allegation was made against Meyiwa’s then-girlfriend, Kelly Khumalo. Lead investigator Brigadier Bongani Gininda read out an affidavit that implicated Khumalo; in it accused number one, Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya stated that the artist instructed them to kill Meyiwa. Accused number two, Bongani Ntanzi allegedly made similar statements.
To challenge the admissibility of these confession accounts, defence attorney Thulani Mngomezulu alleged that Gininda offered Ntanzi R3 million in exchange for cooperating.

Damning Cell Phone Evidence
Adding to the complexity of the case, Gininda further stated Khumalo failed to disclose four cell phone numbers that were discovered by analysts during investigations to the police. The analysis revealed that she was linked to Mncube and Ntuli through mobile phone contact.
“It was further discovered through cell phone analysts that her cell phone memory album has the same photo of a see-through bag containing cash notes and in the exact position or location of Mncube. There is no reasonable explanation as to why Kelly will be in contact telephonically with a hitman or killers of her boyfriend and share the same picture of a bag full of money.” Gininda said.
Kelly Khumalo: The Unanswered Questions
Kelly Khumalo’s name has been recurrently mentioned in the case, casting a shadow of suspicion. Legal expert Melusi Xulu pointed out the peculiarities surrounding her involvement in a Newzroom Africa interview. Despite explosive evidence suggesting her potential role in the murder, Khumalo has not been formally charged or arrested. This raises questions about the thoroughness of the investigation and whether all leads were adequately pursued.
Xulu also highlighted the possibility of two separate dockets in the case, one for the murder and another for individuals in the house who allegedly did not report the incident correctly. The lack of enthusiasm or urgency in investigating Khumalo’s potential involvement is puzzling, especially considering the gravity of the case.
The Path Forward
As the trial progresses, the court faces the challenge of determining the admissibility and weight of the confession statements and the new information presented. The mention of Kelly Khumalo as a potential mastermind behind the murder, without substantial evidence or further investigation, leaves a gap in the narrative. The state’s strategy and the subsequent legal proceedings will be crucial in unravelling the truth behind the tragic death of Senzo Meyiwa.
In conclusion, the latest developments in the Senzo Meyiwa case, particularly the involvement of Kelly Khumalo, have added layers of complexity and intrigue. As the legal battle unfolds, the nation watches closely, hoping for justice to be served in this high-profile case.
