The moment of truth has arrived, and the anticipation is evident as students across the province eagerly await their matric results for 2023 after Umalusi’s approval. The announcement was made on Monday the 15th of January, injecting a mix of anxiety and anticipation into the Gauteng air. The ministerial announcement on the exam results is expected to be made by Department of Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga on the 18th of January, with the general result release set for the 19th of January.
For over 890,000 full-time and part-time students who sat for the matric exams administered by the Department of Basic Education (DBE) towards the end of 2023, this milestone marks the culmination of years of hard work, dedication, and resilience.
Matric Results for 2023 – Examinations Successfully Administered:
While there were some irregularities detected during the exam period, they were said to be not serious enough to compromise the overall credibility and integrity of the administered NSC examinations.
Chairperson of the Umalusi council, Professor Yunus Ballim, revealed at the media briefing about the NSC exams:
“Having studied all the evidence presented, EXCO of Council concluded that the examinations were administered largely in accordance with the regulations pertaining to the conduct, administration, and management of the examinations. EXCO of Council therefore approves the release of the DBE November 2023 examination results.”
The matric results for 2023 of the students implicated in the identified irregularities will be blocked, pending the outcome of the Department of Basic Education’s (DBE) investigations and verification by Umalusi.
There were thankfully no paper leakages during last year’s examinations.
Concerns Over Printing and Packaging Errors
During the briefing, the chairperson also referred to Umalusi’s concerns over “the recurring instances of printing and packaging errors in question papers and the ongoing practice of group copying.”
“The DBE is required to address the directors for compliance and improvement highlighted in the quality assurance of assessment report and to submit an improvement plan by the 15th of March 2024,” the chairperson stated.
Dr. Mafu Rakometsi, Umalusi CEO, reiterated their concerns and emphasised that these errors, including translation quality, caused challenges that could have impacted learner performance and therefore the matric results for 2023, and called for higher vigilance.
He also spoke about the seriousness of the lower but significant number of group copying cases involving 945 NSC candidates.
