The National Tourism Careers Expo 2023 (NTCE 2023), successfully held at NASREC in Johannesburg over the weekend, has opened doors to a plethora of awe-inspiring career opportunities in the vibrant tourism sector. The event brought together industry professionals and aspiring individuals, facilitating dialogue, and knowledge sharing, and provided a platform to explore diverse career paths within the tourism industry.

The Department of Tourism and other stakeholders were prepared to welcome 10,000 learners and teachers from 64 schools across 15 Gauteng districts, 6 LSEN schools, and 10 Private schools from across the region.

Celebrating World Tourism Day in Gauteng.

Unveiling the World of Tourism at the NTCE 2023:

NTCE 2023 offered an immersive experience, providing invaluable insights into the various sectors constituting the vibrant tourism industry. From hospitality and travel management to wildlife conservation and event planning, the expo showcased the diverse array of opportunities available to those interested in a career in tourism.

Industry Expertise and Networking at the NTCE 2023:

The expo boasted an impressive lineup of industry experts and professionals who shared their experiences, tips, and advice with enthusiastic attendees. Experts from leading hotels, travel agencies, tour operators, and other tourism-related fields conducted workshops, presentations, and panel discussions on the latest industry trends, skill requirements, and career prospects.

Additionally, the event provided a networking platform for students, graduates, and job seekers to connect with potential employers and industry influencers. This offered them a unique opportunity to establish valuable connections and gain insights directly from those in the field.

Interactive Workshops and Career Guidance at the NTCE:

NTCE featured a range of interactive workshops designed to better equip aspiring individuals with practical skills and knowledge. These workshops covered a broad spectrum of topics, such as customer service, sustainable tourism practices, digital marketing in the tourism industry, and more. Participants could actively engage in hands-on activities and ask questions to enhance their understanding of the industry.

The expo also offered comprehensive career guidance sessions, where attendees received personalized advice on various career paths, education and training opportunities, and the necessary skills to succeed in the tourism industry. These consultations empowered participants to make informed decisions about their future career choices.

Even Deputy Tourism Minister, Fish Mahlalela, took part in the festivities by doing a walk-through to experience the diverse exhibitions at the NTCE 2023. This after some celebratory remarks in the opening ceremony.

Live displays that added to the excitement were:

  • A Youth Podcast hosted by Solomzi Thandabantu Phenduka and Mbali Sibeko live on Facebook.
  • A gala dinner and awards ceremony.
  • A baking competition at Glenvista High School.
  • A workshop with Airbnb.
  • A stream with RiseFM.

NTCE 2023 – Promoting Cultural Exchange:

A noteworthy aspect of the expo was the emphasis placed on fostering cultural exchange and celebrating the diversity of the tourism industry. The minister emphasised that “the approach to tourism must be inclusive and transformative.” Attendees were treated to cultural showcases, live performances, and art exhibitions that highlighted the rich heritage and traditions of South Africa. Such cultural interactions created an immersive and enriching experience, reflecting the importance of diversity in the tourism sector.
