Mandela Square is reviving its cultural vibe with a brand-new art exhibition called Urban Echoes. The vibrant exhibit, featuring more than 20 sculptures, was created by celebrated sculptor Anton Smit in association with graffiti artist George Kalapov “Mars” and Artyli Gallery. The Urban Echoes collection completes Smit’s Colossal exhibition and will be available to view into 2024.

Smit describes the compilation this way:

“Imagine a [comparison] of eight large heads, each three meters tall, transformed into a street art-inspired painting. Each viewpoint [adjusts] the individually painted heads, which resemble Johannesburg’s urban fabric, and changes the sculptures into a painted landscape. When viewed as a collective, the complete[d] collection resembles a large mural depicting ‘Life in Jo’burg’ in a way never seen before.”

Nelson Mandela Square attracts visitors from all over the world. Diners and shoppers at the venue will be able to enjoy a greater experience of their time in the prestigious Sandton shopping centre with captivating views of the statues.

Smit explained that the art is:

“An urban landscape of the City of Gold – proclaiming a message to the future – one of enhanced creativity and freedom. A message of life in abundance, a message of inspired children who enter boldly into this world.”

The property managers are “thrilled” about the art exhibition. Brian Unsted, the asset manager of Nelson Mandela Square, said:

Anton Smit and Mars’ remarkable collaboration brings elegance and sophistication, complementing the Square’s splendid ambiance.
