In commemoration of the 47th anniversary of the June 16 Soweto Uprising and to combat high youth unemployment and poverty in the region, the Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) is undergoing a massive recruitment drive called Nasi iSpani. Departments of the GPG and its entities have been advertising funded vacancies for in-person application and have recruited and trained 6,000 Crime Prevention Wardens and 6,000 members of the green army since February 2023. As of June 2023, the GPG has been concluding the enlistment of 6,000 young people to be trained as solar technicians.
In July 2023, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi announced on Twitter that 1,000 additional jobs have been made available. These jobs are for the Vacant Land & Facilities Maintenance Programme for a period of 12 months. No experience is needed for the role and the deadline for online applications is 31 July 2023.
Minimum Requirements for the Additional Nasi iSpani Vacancies
Before you apply, make sure that you meet the following requirements:
- Ability to read and write (basic communication skills).
- Ability/willingness to utilise diverse types of hand tools.
- Ability to work independently with little supervision on vacant land.
- Exposure to working on vacant land sites will be an advantage.
- Must be available for the duration of the programme and prepared to sign a non-renewable fixed contract.
- Must reside in the ward and close to the project site.
- Must have no criminal record.

Skills, Attributes, and Competencies Needed for the Additional Nasi iSpani Vacancies
The GPG is looking for applicants that have:
- Good verbal and written communication.
- Knowledge of the job, teamwork, interpersonal relations, flexibility
- Knowledge and understanding of the basic legislative framework regulating the waste and environmental sector.
- Basic understanding of the OHS on safety procedures for working on vacant land.
- Basic understanding of Bathu Pele principles.

Job Duties for the Additional Nasi iSpani Vacancies
Successful candidates will be completing a regular cycle of maintenance of the sites. This means that site clearance must be done on an ongoing basis throughout the year to ensure that the site is always properly cleaned and maintained. Clearing includes:
- Getting rid of debris, shrubs, papers, bottles, and any other waste materials.
- Putting away all unwanted materials on sites.
- Cutting grass and tree felling.
- Loading and offloading of waste on landfill sites.
Please note participants who have previously participated in any EPWP programme across the government in the past five years will NOT be considered.
