Two suspects have been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of an elderly couple in a shocking road rage incident that took place outside Boitekong Shopping Mall in Rustenburg over the weekend.
Police moved quickly following the incident, which occurred on Saturday, leading to the arrest of two men aged 29 and 41. According to police spokesperson Colonel Adele Myburgh, the suspects were tracked down on Tuesday after a coordinated operation involving crime intelligence officers, the Rustenburg and Boitekong Visible Policing units, the Phokeng K9 unit, and other law enforcement agencies.
How Police Tracked Them Down
Investigators successfully traced and recovered the getaway vehicle, a Kia Rio, in the Ndamoyi area of Boitekong. Upon interrogation, one of the suspects admitted to driving the vehicle during the incident and claimed his passenger had pulled the trigger.
The first suspect then led officers to Rustenburg East, where his alleged accomplice was located. Upon arrival, the second man handed over a pistol believed to have been used in the shooting. He was immediately arrested and the firearm seized.
Murder Charges Filed
Both suspects are expected to appear before the Rustenburg Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 19 June 2025, where they will face two counts of murder. The case has sparked outrage in the community, highlighting the growing concern over violent incidents sparked by road rage.
Major General Patrick Asaneng, North West’s Acting Provincial Police Commissioner, praised the swift and collaborative police work that led to the arrests and recovery of critical evidence.
“This level of dedication by the team must serve as a warning to anyone who believes they can commit violent crimes and evade justice,” said Asaneng. “Our officers will pursue every lead to ensure offenders are held accountable.”
Community in Mourning
The victims, whose identities have not yet been officially released, were described by witnesses as long-time residents of the area. The senseless act of violence has left the community shaken, with many calling for tougher laws to address road rage and gun violence. Police investigations are still ongoing.
