Businessman Shot in Apparent Hit

Maxwell Mlangeni, the owner of Today’s Destiny Logistics, was ambushed while driving his luxury Ferrari on Bethal Road in Witbank earlier this week. The vehicle was left riddled with bullet holes, as seen in a video captured at the crime scene.

Eyewitnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots before seeing Mlangeni’s vehicle veer off the road. Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after and transported the businessman to a nearby medical facility, where he is currently fighting for his life. Doctors have not yet released an official update on his condition.

Local businesses and residents have expressed shock and concern over the attack, with many fearing that targeted crimes against prominent individuals are on the rise.

Police Investigation Underway

Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Colonel Jabu Ndubane, stated that the motive behind the attack remains unclear, and no arrests have been made. Law enforcement officials have urged anyone with relevant information to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigation.

Police are currently reviewing CCTV footage from nearby businesses and conducting interviews with witnesses in an effort to track down the perpetrators. Authorities believe the attack was well-planned and executed with precision, suggesting the involvement of experienced criminals.

The provincial police department has reassured the public that they are committed to bringing those responsible to justice. Ndubane emphasized that police visibility in the area would be increased to prevent further violent incidents.

Related Incidents: Crime on the Rise

This violent attack comes amidst a broader crackdown on crime in South Africa. Earlier this week, six cash-in-transit (CIT) heist suspects were fatally shot in Tshwane.

According to police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masodo, the suspects were intercepted while allegedly en route to rob a cash van in Atteridgeville. Law enforcement attempted to halt the suspects’ vehicles, resulting in a shootout that claimed six lives. One suspect was taken into custody, and officers recovered illegal firearms and ammunition at the scene.

This incident highlights the growing concern surrounding violent crimes in the country, particularly those involving organized criminal syndicates.

Crime Crackdown in Gauteng

Meanwhile, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has reaffirmed the province’s commitment to tackling crime. During his 2025 State of the Province Address in Tshwane, he revealed that over 400 criminal kingpins have been identified as part of the province’s crime-fighting strategy.

Lesufi acknowledged that crime remains a major issue alongside other pressing concerns such as deteriorating infrastructure and economic instability. Recent crime statistics from the third quarter of 2024 (October to December) highlighted that Gauteng accounted for 25% of the country’s murder cases, followed by KwaZulu-Natal at 21.4%, the Eastern Cape at 18.9%, and the Western Cape at 17.4%.

Lesufi also announced new initiatives aimed at curbing crime, including increased police presence in high-risk areas, improved surveillance systems, and the introduction of community-led crime prevention programs.

Community Reaction and Calls for Action

The shooting of Maxwell Mlangeni has ignited discussions on the need for better security measures for business owners and high-profile individuals. Many believe that crime syndicates are becoming bolder in their operations, posing a significant threat to both personal safety and economic stability.

Several business forums in Mpumalanga have called for urgent action from law enforcement, including the implementation of more proactive crime prevention strategies. Some are advocating for private security firms to collaborate more closely with the police to enhance safety in the region.

As police continue their investigation into the Witbank shooting, authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement.

With crime rates steadily increasing, there is a growing demand for long-term solutions to address the underlying causes of violent crime. The government’s commitment to crime reduction will be tested in the coming months as law enforcement agencies work to dismantle criminal networks and ensure justice for victims like Mlangeni.
