The N3 toll highway near Van Reenen’s Pass has reopened following a devastating crash that claimed the lives of 18 people, including five children. The tragic incident, involving a minibus taxi, a truck, and a light motor vehicle, occurred on Monday night in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).
Van Reenen’s Pass: Major Route Disruption
The collision forced the closure of the N3, a vital artery connecting Gauteng and KZN, leaving motorists stranded as recovery operations were underway. Authorities worked tirelessly to clear the wreckage and restore traffic flow.
Recovery Efforts Complete
Thania Dhoogra, spokesperson for the N3 Toll Concession, confirmed that the highway has been reopened.
“The recovery operations have been completed at the scene of the multiple-vehicle pileup on the N3 toll route. All lanes on Van Reenen’s Pass, Tugela Main Line, and East Ramp Plaza are now open to traffic,” said Dhoogra.
Safety Advisory for Motorists
Motorists have been urged to exercise extreme caution when traveling along the route. Dhoogra emphasized the importance of adjusting driving behavior to match road conditions.
“Reduce speed, maintain safe following distances, keep headlights on, and refrain from overtaking unless it is absolutely safe. Always adhere to the rules of the road and follow instructions from law enforcement officials,” she advised.
