What is eHomeAffairs?

In the era of digital convenience, accessing government services online has become indispensable. The South African Department of Home Affairs has innovatively responded to this trend by developing the eHomeAffairs platform. This system simplifies the Smart ID online application process, enabling South African citizens to handle their applications efficiently from their digital devices.

eHomeAffairs brings several convenient features right to your fingertips:

  • Online Application Submission: Apply for your Smart ID and passport directly from your home.
  • Secure Online Payments: Pay securely online without the need for cash or physical payments.
  • Appointment Booking: Schedule appointments at participating Home Affairs branches.

Although you can complete many steps online, a visit to a Home Affairs office is required to capture biometric details—like your photograph, fingerprints, and signature.

Important Note

While the Smart ID online application process is primarily online, applicants must visit a Home Affairs branch or a Home Affairs-enabled bank office to capture biometric details like photos, fingerprints, and signatures. Finalizing your application at a Home Affairs office does not require an appointment, however banks require you to make an appointment.

Step-by-Step Guide to Using eHomeAffairs for Your Smart ID Online Application

Step 1: Register a Profile

Begin by creating a secure profile on eHomeAffairs. You’ll need to provide personal details, create a password, and answer security questions to ensure your account is safe.

Step 2: Verify Your Phone

After registering, you’ll receive a One-Time Pin (OTP) via SMS to confirm your cellphone number. Enter this OTP to proceed.

Step 3: Log into Your Profile

Use the OTP sent to your phone to log into your profile securely.

Step 4: Fill Out the Application Form

Fill out the application form for your Smart ID card or passport. Make sure to complete all mandatory fields (marked in red).

Step 5: Submit the Application

Once you’ve captured your details, select “Submit” to send your application for review.

Step 6: Upload Supporting Documents

Any necessary documents, like a certified copy of your birth certificate and proof of residential address, must be uploaded. Be ready to present the originals at a Home Affairs office or bank branch.

Step 7: Make an Online Payment

Securely capture your banking details for payment. Note that this is just an instruction to your bank—log into your internet banking to authorize the payment. A guide to this process can be requested from your bank.

Use the Branch Appointment Booking System (BABS) to schedule your biometric appointment at a Home Affairs office or a Home Affairs-enabled bank branch.
