As the cost of education in South Africa continues to rise, opportunities like the SIOC Community Development Trust (SIOC-CDT) bursary offer invaluable support to students from disadvantaged backgrounds. This bursary ensures students in need have access to higher education, lifting financial burdens and providing them with the tools necessary to achieve their career dreams.

In this article, we’ll dive deep into the SIOC bursary, detailing what it covers, who qualifies, and how to apply. If you’re eager to pursue higher education but face financial challenges, the SIOC-CDT bursary could be your gateway to success.

What is the SIOC-CDT Bursary?

The SIOC bursary is funded by the Sishen Iron Ore Company, part of the Anglo American group, and is administered by the SIOC Community Development Trust. Established to uplift the communities around its mining operations, SIOC-CDT provides financial assistance to students from the following communities:

  • Gamagara
  • Ga-Segonyana
  • Joe Morolong
  • Tsantsabane
  • Thabazimbi

This bursary aims to bridge educational gaps by offering comprehensive financial support to students pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in various fields, covering expenses such as tuition, accommodation, study materials, and even a monthly stipend. In doing so, SIOC-CDT enables students from low-income families to gain access to quality education and build a secure future.

Fields of Study Supported by the SIOC-CDT Bursary

Unlike many bursaries limited to specific fields, the SIOC bursary covers a broad range of study areas. This allows students to pursue degrees aligned with their passions and career aspirations, whether in health sciences, engineering, education, or business. Here are the primary fields of study eligible for funding:

Agriculture

  • Veterinary Science

  • Statistics and Mathematics

Engineering and Sciences

  • Civil, Electrical, and Quantity Surveying
  • Geology and Town Planning
  • Environmental Health
  • Computer Sciences and Information Technology

This diversity in supported fields allows applicants to explore career paths that align with their interests while meeting the needs of South Africa’s economy.

What Expenses Does the SIOC-CDT Bursary Cover?

The SIOC bursary is designed to ease financial constraints for students by covering a range of academic and living expenses:

  • Tuition and Registration Fees: Full coverage for academic program costs.
  • Accommodation: Assistance with lodging expenses for students studying away from home.
  • Study Materials and Laptop: Provision of prescribed textbooks and a laptop.
  • Monthly Stipend: A monthly allowance to help with living costs.
  • Assistive Devices: Specialized equipment for students with disabilities, ensuring equal access to educational resources.

This extensive support allows bursary recipients to focus entirely on their studies, without the added pressure of financial stress.

Eligibility Criteria for the SIOC Bursary

Given its popularity and the limited number of awards available, the SIOC bursary has specific eligibility requirements. To qualify, applicants must:

  1. Be South African Citizens: Applicants must reside within one of the SIOC-CDT beneficiary communities.
  2. Age Requirement: Applicants should be under 35 years old by the application deadline.
  3. Financial Need: Candidates must demonstrate a household income of less than R600,000 annually.
  4. Proof of Admission: Must have proof of acceptance or provisional acceptance into a public higher education institution for the 2025 academic year.

These requirements ensure that the bursary reaches the students most in need, supporting them in their journey toward a brighter future.

To complete the SIOC bursary application, candidates must submit specific documents that verify their eligibility and financial status. Below is a list of the essential documents required:
