The Cyril Ramaphosa Education Trust (CRET) bursary programme for 2025 is now open, providing an incredible opportunity for financially disadvantaged students who are committed to their education and future. This bursary programme is more than just financial aid; it’s a full support system designed to foster academic excellence and holistic growth, helping young South Africans from disadvantaged backgrounds reach their true potential.

For those passionate about advancing their education and making a lasting impact on their communities, the CRET bursary programme is the stepping stone to success.

Who Can Apply for the CRET Bursary?

The CRET bursary programme is designed to help those who demonstrate financial need and a commitment to their studies. To be eligible, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  1. South African Citizenship: Only South African citizens between 16 and 27 years old may apply.
  2. Financial Need: Applicants must prove financial need. Households with a combined annual income of less than R650,000 are eligible.
  3. Education Level: The bursary is open to current matriculants and undergraduate students already enrolled at a recognised university or TVET college.
  4. Field of Study: CRET prioritises students pursuing studies in:
    • Sciences (excluding MBChB),
    • Technology,
    • Engineering,
    • Commerce and Finance,
    • Education,
    • Critical skills (e.g., welding, plumbing, renewable energy, and entrepreneurship).
  5. Motivational Letter: A strong motivational letter explaining your passion, goals, and reasons for choosing your field of study is required.
  6. Psychometric Test: All applicants must submit a psychometric test result supporting their chosen field. The free Standard Bank PluggedIn psychometric test can be used.
  7. Supporting Documents: A complete application includes:
    • Certified copy of your South African ID,
    • Proof of home address,
    • Certified copy of the most recent academic record,
    • Proof of application or registration at a recognised institution,
    • Psychometric test results,
    • Proof of family income, including payslips, unemployment affidavits, or proof of pension or grant, as applicable.

The Application Process

Applying for the CRET bursary is straightforward but requires careful attention to detail. Here’s how to apply:

  1. Visit the CRET Website: Start by visiting the CRET website, where application instructions are provided.
  2. Prepare and Submit Required Documents: Upload all necessary documentation (listed above) with your application.
  3. Use the QR Code for Easy Access: On the application page, scan the QR code provided for direct access.

Applications close on 13 December 2024, so submit your complete application well before the deadline. Missing information or incomplete documentation can lead to disqualification.

What Does the CRET Bursary Cover?

The CRET bursary provides comprehensive support to help students excel both academically and personally. Here’s what recipients receive:

  • Tuition Fees: Full academic fees at a recognised South African institution are covered.
  • Textbooks and Study Materials: Essential educational resources are included.
  • Accommodation: CRET provides safe and secure housing for students studying away from home.
  • Meals and Living Allowance: A monthly living allowance to cover meals and other basic needs.
  • Transport: When necessary, transport costs are covered.

Beyond financial support, CRET’s bursary programme offers psychosocial support and career guidance to ensure students are prepared for both academic and life challenges.
