Capitec Bank Smart ID Card Rollout Delayed but Still Coming in 2025
Capitec Bank’s highly anticipated Smart ID Card service will not launch as early as planned, but it remains on track for 2025. The delay, however, does not change the bank’s commitment to improving access to digital ID services across South Africa.
Partnership Between Capitec and Home Affairs
Capitec is one of nine banks collaborating with the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) to expand smart ID card and passport services. This partnership forms part of a national effort to make digital identity more accessible by extending these services beyond government offices.
As South Africa’s largest bank by customer base, Capitec’s involvement could significantly accelerate access to Smart ID Cards, especially in areas without DHA offices. The initiative aims to reduce long queues and improve efficiency in ID and passport applications.
Why the Rollout Was Delayed
Capitec initially announced plans to begin offering smart ID card applications at selected branches in October 2025. However, recent updates from Home Affairs indicate that testing of the new integrated system will only begin in November 2025.
A public pilot phase is scheduled to start in early 2026. This delay is linked to the development of a new application programming interface (API), which will connect bank systems to Home Affairs’ backend for a seamless digital process.
How the Smart ID Card System Will Work
The new API will allow banks to manage the entire smart ID card application process. It will enable:
- Application initiation and document verification
 - Biometric enrolment
 - Collection of completed smart ID cards

This system will eliminate the need for Home Affairs staff at bank branches, a model inspired by the limited eHomeAffairs pilot currently active at only 30 locations.

Capitec’s Commitment and Testing Phase
Despite the delay, Capitec remains fully engaged in testing its systems to ensure readiness for the first rollout phase. The bank confirmed it will showcase its smart ID card technology at the Innovation Exchange in Johannesburg on 20 November 2025.
A few selected Capitec branches will pilot the service first. These locations were chosen strategically to serve communities with limited access to Home Affairs offices. Capitec stated that it will only publish the final list of participating branches in 2026, once operational testing and client feedback are complete.
Expansion Plans for 2026
Looking ahead, Capitec aims to enable smart ID card applications at 100 branches by March 2026, expanding to up to 300 branches by year-end. Collectively, the nine participating banks — including Absa, FNB, Nedbank, TymeBank, Discovery Bank, African Bank, Old Mutual, and Standard Bank — plan to offer smart ID card services at more than 150 locations by early 2026.
When combined with Home Affairs’ live capture offices, South Africans could soon access over 1,000 points nationwide to apply for smart IDs and passports.
Benefits of the Capitec Smart ID Card Rollout
The expansion will modernise identity management and strengthen national security. By helping replace an estimated 16 million green ID books still in circulation, the programme will curb identity theft and document fraud.
In the future, the same digital platform could support other Home Affairs services, such as passport renewals and even online identity verification via banking apps.
What South Africans Can Expect Next
Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber described the initiative as the department’s most significant technological advancement in decades. The partnership with banks will save costs, reduce congestion at DHA offices, and make essential services more accessible.
Capitec clients should expect a gradual rollout, starting with limited branches and expanding in phases. Once the pilot phase concludes, full public access to smart ID card applications will follow, bringing the long-awaited service to communities nationwide.
