AmaZulu midfielder Bongani Zungu has made it clear that his dream of donning the Bafana Bafana jersey is far from over. Despite being 32 and having last featured for the national team several years ago, the experienced midfielder believes he still has what it takes to fight his way back into coach Hugo Broos’ plans.
Zungu, who has collected more than 30 international caps during his career, admits he was disappointed to be overlooked during his time in Europe with Amiens and Rangers, but insists his hunger remains strong.
“I play football with the hope of representing my country. I’m at a club where I’m happy and enjoying my football, and as long as I work hard and stay fit, I can achieve anything,” he said.
AFCON and World Cup in Sight
With AFCON 2025 on the horizon and South Africa edging closer to FIFA World Cup qualification, Zungu says he has every reason to keep pushing. Although Broos has largely opted for younger players, the continued presence of Themba Zwane in the squad offers encouragement that experience can still be valued.
Senior Role at AmaZulu
Back at AmaZulu, Zungu has embraced his responsibilities as one of the senior players in the squad. He takes pride in guiding the younger generation, passing on lessons learned from his career at home and abroad.
“I’ve been a youngster before, and I could always see how the senior players would guide us. I’ve won a few trophies in my career, so that winning mentality is something I try to share with the youngsters,” he explained.
Carling Knockout Challenge
Zungu and his Usuthu teammates are preparing for their Carling Knockout Cup clash with Magesi next weekend. Following their disappointment in the MTN8, the midfielder insists the squad is determined to make a strong cup run this time around.
