Kaizer Chiefs have advanced to the Nedbank Cup semi-finals following a dramatic and controversial 3-1 victory over Stellenbosch FC at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. The result has left Stellies and their supporters frustrated, with key refereeing decisions dominating post-match discussions.

Kaizer Chiefs Continue Dominance Over Stellenbosch

Having already beaten Stellenbosch twice in the Premier Soccer League this season, Amakhosi went into this fixture knowing their opponents would be eager for revenge. However, their determination saw them edge out another crucial win, albeit in contentious circumstances.

The first major moment came in the 20th minute when Ismael Toure was penalised for a deliberate handball inside the box. Kaizer Chiefs capitalised as Inacio Miguel converted the resulting penalty to put them ahead. Stellies responded well, showing resilience as they pushed for an equaliser.

Stellenbosch vs Kaizer Chiefs: Dramatic Late Controversy

Despite Chiefs’ early advantage, Stellenbosch found a way back into the game in the 86th minute. A well-delivered corner by Sanele Barns was met by Andre de Jong, whose header stunned Amakhosi and levelled the scores at 1-1.

However, the biggest talking point arrived deep into stoppage time. Chiefs won a corner, and amid the chaos in the box, Pule Mmodi found the back of the net. Stellenbosch players protested vehemently, claiming George Matlou had pushed goalkeeper Sage Stephens before the goal. The assistant referee initially appeared to agree, but after consulting with his colleagues, the goal was awarded, leaving Stellies furious.

With Stellenbosch still reeling from the decision, Chiefs added a third goal on the counterattack. Youngster Mfundo Vilakazi raced through and coolly slotted home, securing the Soweto giants’ place in the last four of the tournament.

Key Performers and Talking Points

Thabo Cele was outstanding in midfield for Chiefs, winning key battles and keeping the team ticking. His display once again raised questions about why Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos overlooked him for the national team.

On the other hand, Stellenbosch’s Ismael Toure had a night to forget. His costly handball led to Chiefs’ opening goal, and later, a rash challenge on Gaston Sirino earned him a booking, meaning he will be suspended for Stellies’ next clash against Orlando Pirates.

What Lies Ahead?

Kaizer Chiefs will now shift their focus to their upcoming league fixture against Cape Town City as they continue their quest to end a decade-long trophy drought. Meanwhile, Stellenbosch must regroup, with their attention turning to securing a top-three finish in the PSL and progressing in the CAF Confederation Cup.

While Chiefs celebrate their place in the semi-finals, the controversy surrounding their win will continue to be debated for some time.
