A new speed hump is being installed on Ballito Drive, just outside Seaward Estate, in response to two fatal accidents at the intersection. The installation is part of ongoing efforts to enhance road safety in the area, particularly for motorists traveling along this busy stretch of road.
The KwaDukuza Municipality commenced construction on Monday, positioning the speed hump approximately 40 meters before Seaward Estate’s gatehouse. The hump will span both lanes of traffic to ensure that motorists slow down when approaching the intersection. By forcing vehicles to reduce speed, the measure is expected to lower the risk of accidents and improve overall road safety in the vicinity.
Advocacy for Traffic-Calming Measures
Ward 30 Councillor Jack Abrahams has been advocating for traffic-calming measures since December, following the latest fatal motorcycle accident in November. The tragic incident involved a motorcyclist traveling uphill on Ballito Drive who was struck by a vehicle exiting Seaward Estate. This marked the second time in eight years that such an accident had occurred at this location, highlighting the need for improved traffic regulation and safety enhancements.
According to Abrahams, the speed hump is being placed at a strategic point on Ballito Drive to ensure that vehicles approaching from below are forced to slow down. This is particularly important given the layout of the road, which includes a blind corner near the intersection. By reducing speed, the risk of collisions with cars exiting Seaward Estate will be significantly minimized.
Budget Constraints Limit Immediate Actions
Despite the clear need for additional safety measures, financial constraints have limited the scope of immediate interventions. The municipality’s budget for this financial year had already been allocated to speed hump installations in four other wards—4, 6, 21, and 22—leaving insufficient funds to install a second speed hump on Ballito Drive at this time.
However, Abrahams remains optimistic about future improvements, stating, “If the first speed hump proves effective, we will advocate for a second one once the new financial year begins in July.” The addition of a second hump would further enhance safety by ensuring that vehicles traveling in both directions are forced to slow down before reaching the intersection.
Community and Estate Association Involvement
In addition to municipal efforts, the Seaward Estate Master Homeowners Association is also considering additional measures to improve road safety. According to spokesperson Rieva McMurtrie, the association is currently investigating the feasibility of installing a second speed hump on Ballito Drive. If implemented, this would provide an extra layer of protection for both motorists and pedestrians in the area.
Residents and road users have expressed mixed reactions to the new speed hump installation. While many support the measure as a necessary step to prevent further accidents, others have raised concerns about potential traffic congestion and delays. Some motorists worry that the speed hump may disrupt the flow of traffic, particularly during peak hours. However, road safety advocates argue that the benefits far outweigh any minor inconveniences, as the primary goal is to save lives and reduce the frequency of collisions.
Ongoing Monitoring and Future Plans
The KwaDukuza Municipality has assured residents that the installation process will be carried out efficiently and with minimal disruption to traffic. Local authorities have also committed to monitoring the effectiveness of the speed hump and gathering feedback from road users to determine whether additional measures are necessary.
The issue of road safety on Ballito Drive is not a new one. Over the years, various stakeholders, including community members, local businesses, and municipal representatives, have raised concerns about the dangers posed by speeding vehicles and poor visibility at certain intersections. The recent accidents have reignited calls for more comprehensive traffic management strategies to prevent further tragedies.
Moving forward, local officials are expected to continue assessing the impact of the speed hump and exploring additional measures to enhance road safety. Potential future interventions may include additional traffic calming measures, improved road signage, and enhanced visibility at key intersections.
A Step Towards Safer Roads
With these initiatives, authorities and local stakeholders hope to significantly improve road safety along Ballito Drive and prevent further tragedies. While the installation of the speed hump marks an important step in the right direction, continued vigilance and proactive planning will be essential to ensure long-term safety improvements for all road users.
As the community awaits the results of this initiative, the message remains clear: road safety must be a priority, and every effort must be made to protect the lives of motorists, pedestrians, and residents alike. By working together, local authorities and community members can create a safer environment and reduce the likelihood of further accidents on Ballito Drive.
