Why Did MK Party Members Protest at Hobart SPAR?

According to MK Party representative Bafana Mthembu, the protest was triggered by the death of a staff member, identified as Daniel, who allegedly passed away inside a lift at his workplace on February 5. The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, and MK Party members are demanding transparency and accountability from the supermarket.

Mthembu expressed frustration over what he described as a lack of empathy and concern from the supermarket’s management. He stated:

“We want justice… The store needs to take responsibility because the way they act is as if they are hiding something… We want answers.”

He further mentioned that the protesters were demanding access to CCTV footage from the incident and an opportunity to inspect the lift where Daniel allegedly died.

How the Protest Unfolded

Eyewitnesses reported that MK Party members lined up at the store’s entrance, blocking shoppers from entering. In the video circulating online, a woman can be heard explaining the situation while capturing the MK members standing with their party flag in hand.

As tensions escalated, the situation prompted the arrival of:
✔ Police officers to control the crowd
✔ Bouncers who tried to restore order

Despite their presence, protesters stood firm in their demand for answers regarding the staff member’s death.

Hobart SPAR’s Response

When approached for comment, Hobart SPAR management declined to speak to the media. A manager at the scene stated:

“I will not speak to the media but to residents. If they allow you to our brief meeting with them, I will simply not say anything.”

As of now, the supermarket has resumed normal operations, closing at 19:00 as per its usual business hours.

What Are Authorities Saying?

The Sandton Chronicle reached out to SAPS spokesperson Jeff Phora for an official statement regarding the incident, but no response has been received yet. Further updates are expected as police investigate the matter.

Community Reactions and Concerns

The protest has sparked mixed reactions:
➡ Some support the MK Party’s demand for justice, emphasizing the need for businesses to prioritize worker safety.
➡ Others criticize the disruption, arguing that blocking access to the supermarket inconvenienced innocent shoppers.

The incident has also raised broader concerns about workplace safety regulations and whether proper protocols were followed regarding the staff member’s death.

What Happens Next?

As the investigation continues, the public awaits a formal response from the SAPS and Hobart SPAR management. The incident highlights the increasing role of political activism in labor disputes, especially when there is perceived negligence from employers.

For now, the supermarket is back to normal operations, but questions remain unanswered regarding Daniel’s death and the circumstances leading up to the protest.
