South Africa Applauds Gaza Truce, Calls for Lasting Peace and Palestinian Sovereignty
South Africa has hailed the recent Gaza ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel as a pivotal step towards addressing the severe humanitarian crisis. The 15-month-long conflict, which claimed over 46,700 lives, including 18,000 children, left the region in turmoil.
Ceasefire Details and Palestinian Celebration
The truce, brokered in Doha, Qatar, is set to take effect on Sunday, 19 January. It marks a critical juncture for Gaza, where Palestinian families celebrated in the streets following the announcement. According to Hamas official Izzat al-Risheq, the agreement ensures the full withdrawal of Israeli forces, the return of displaced residents, and a permanent cessation of hostilities.
South Africa’s Position on the Gaza Crisis
The South African Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) has welcomed the ceasefire as a foundation for a just and enduring peace. DIRCO spokesperson Chrispin Phiri emphasized the importance of establishing an independent and contiguous Palestinian state.
“The sovereignty and territorial integrity of Palestine must be upheld, and illegal settlement expansions must cease,” said Phiri.
South Africa also called for the protection of human rights for both Palestinians and Israelis, underscoring the need for an equitable resolution.
Humanitarian Aid and ICJ Rulings
As part of its commitment to global justice, South Africa has intensified its advocacy efforts at the International Court of Justice (ICJ). In December 2023, it filed an 84-page application accusing Israel of genocide and has since approached the court multiple times to demand immediate measures to halt violence in Gaza.
The ICJ has supported South Africa’s plea for interim measures to ensure unrestricted humanitarian aid access, including food, water, shelter, and healthcare. Despite international legal interventions, aid delivery remains hindered, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis for Gaza’s 2.3 million residents.
A Step Towards Peace
The ceasefire comes amid mounting international pressure for Israel to end its occupation of Palestinian territories. In 2023, the ICJ issued a landmark advisory opinion condemning Israel’s policies as apartheid and racial segregation against Palestinians. South Africa has consistently championed global efforts to hold Israel accountable for its actions, urging compliance with international law and humanitarian principles.
South Africa’s unwavering stance reflects its broader vision of a world where justice, human rights, and peace prevail. The Gaza ceasefire is a significant milestone, but sustained international cooperation is essential to ensure long-term stability in the region and the realization of Palestinian sovereignty.
