Two Separate Crashes in KwaZulu-Natal Leave More Than 30 Injured, Schoolchildren Among the Victims
KwaZulu-Natal experienced two severe road accidents on Monday, resulting in more than 30 injured people, including schoolchildren. Emergency services rushed to both scenes to assist the injured and stabilize the situation.
First Incident: Taxi Accident Injures 15 Schoolchildren
The first accident occurred on the M4 northbound near Umhlanga around 11am. A taxi carrying schoolchildren, aged between 10 and 14, veered off the road and came to rest in the bushes. According to ALS Paramedics Medical Services spokesperson Garrith Jamieson, the accident led to moderate to serious injuries for the children.
A quick triage system was implemented, and advanced life support paramedics were dispatched to assist. All injured children were stabilized on-site and transported to Durban hospitals for further medical care. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
Second Incident: N3 Collision Causes Total Carnage
Just over an hour later, at 12:30pm, a second crash occurred on the N3 Durban bound near Spine Road. A taxi collided with a car, causing both vehicles to overturn multiple times. Some passengers were ejected during the incident, described as “total carnage” by Jamieson.
Eighteen people sustained injuries ranging from moderate to severe. Emergency responders set up another triage system, stabilizing the victims before transferring them to hospitals for further treatment.
Investigations Ongoing
The South African Police Service (SAPS) is investigating both accidents to determine their causes. Traffic disruptions were reported in the affected areas, highlighting the importance of road safety in the province.
