Prepare for Festive Season Crowds: ACSA’s Guidelines for Stress-Free Domestic and International Flights

The Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) has issued crucial advice for travellers during the festive season, urging passengers to arrive at airports earlier than usual to ensure smooth check-ins amidst peak travel volumes. This recommendation follows an anticipated surge in passenger numbers, as both domestic and international travellers flock to the skies for holiday festivities.

Revised Check-In Times

ACSA recommends international travellers arrive three hours before departure, while domestic travellers should plan to be at the airport at least two hours in advance. The extension accommodates the increased time needed for staff to handle the high volume of passengers efficiently.

Record Passenger Volumes

ACSA expects 119,696 international passengers between December 20 and 24 and 262,108 domestic passengers during the same period. On December 20 alone, 20,886 international travellers and 39,428 domestic travellers are forecasted to pass through terminals.

Operational Challenges and Future Improvements

Recent disruptions, such as refuelling delays at OR Tambo International Airport, highlighted the need for improved infrastructure. ACSA CEO Mpumi Mpofu acknowledged these issues, attributing them to a lack of maintenance and financial losses totalling R43 million last year.

To address these challenges, ACSA has earmarked R21.7 billion over the next five years, with 70% allocated for refurbishments, including the installation of a new jet line to enhance refuelling systems.

January Traffic Outlook

ACSA anticipates a second wave of outbound travellers in January, complemented by staggered inbound traffic. Travellers are urged to stay vigilant and plan their journeys carefully to avoid delays during this period.
