Joburg water outage – Joburg residents faced a challenging long weekend without water, but the situation worsened due to acts of vandalism, theft, and attacks on water employees, causing further delays in restoration efforts for the Joburg water outage.

Criminal Incidents Hamper Restoration Efforts

Bulk water supplier Rand Water and distributor Johannesburg Water provided updates on Tuesday regarding their weekend maintenance operations. However, restoration timelines have been negatively impacted by multiple criminal incidents, extending the Joburg water outage.

Johannesburg Water reported cases of vandalism, theft, and assault against their employees and contractors during the ongoing Joburg water outage.

  • Robbery and Assault: On Friday night, a female employee was robbed between 10pm and 11pm while returning home. Johannesburg Water confirmed that she narrowly escaped a sexual assault.
  • Water Delivery Attacks: Water delivery trucks became targets on Saturday, with drivers reportedly robbed, and their vehicles looted in separate incidents.
  • Violence in Westbury: On Sunday night, a water truck refilling in Westbury was attacked, leaving the driver injured and the vehicle inoperable.
  • Vandalized JoJo Tanks and Valves: Across the city, JoJo tanks were vandalized, and Rand Water valves and meters were damaged, particularly in Soweto, where components were also stolen.

Johannesburg Water clarified that such incidents will delay the recovery of water systems in affected areas as repairs to vandalized infrastructure must be completed before supply can resume, prolonging the Joburg water outage.

“Several Rand Water valves and meters have been vandalized and components stolen around Soweto. This will delay recovery of some of the Soweto systems,” Johannesburg Water stated.

Joburg Reservoir Water Levels

Despite ongoing repairs, Johannesburg Water warned that reservoir levels remain critically low across several suburbs, with recovery timelines extended due to the vandalism, exacerbating the Joburg water outage.

As of 9:30 AM on December 17, key reservoir and tower water levels were reported as follows:

  • Helderkruin, Constantia, and Quellerina Towers: Below 10% capacity, feeding parts of Roodepoort.
  • Crosby and Brixton Towers: Single-digit water levels.
  • Hursthill Bypass and Northcliff Tower: Recovering, with levels at 17% and 28%, respectively.
  • Aeroton, Chiawelo, and Doornkop West: Above 30% capacity.
  • Meadowlands and Linden Reservoirs: Showing better progress, reaching levels above 50%.

Restoration Delays in Soweto and Other Areas

While some suburbs began seeing water restored on Tuesday morning, areas like Soweto remain at risk of extended outages. Johannesburg Water reiterated that water pumping can only resume once reservoirs reach sufficient capacity, impacting the ongoing Joburg water outage.

The theft of infrastructure such as valves has caused significant setbacks in the planned recovery schedule. Residents in affected areas are urged to exercise patience as repair teams work to restore supply and resolve the Joburg water outage.

Final Updates

Johannesburg Water and Rand Water continue to monitor reservoir levels closely and provide updates as repairs progress. Residents are encouraged to report incidents of vandalism or theft to help protect critical infrastructure during the Joburg water outage.
