Driving vs Flying: 2024 Holiday Travel Costs

With the festive season fast approaching, South Africans are exploring cost-effective travel options for their holiday plans. In 2024, driving emerges as the more affordable choice compared to flying for journeys from Johannesburg to popular holiday destinations like Cape Town and Durban. This significant cost disparity highlights the rising appeal of road trips for budget-conscious travelers.

Comparing Travel Costs

Driving Costs
Driving costs have become noticeably more economical thanks to lower fuel prices in December 2024, which have dropped by over R2 per liter compared to the previous year. The estimated costs for a return car trip from Johannesburg to these destinations are:

  • Cape Town: Approximately R4,192
  • Durban: Approximately R2,181

These calculations include fuel expenses and toll fees for popular vehicle types:

  • Cape Town:
    • SUV (Toyota Corolla Cross): R4,516
    • Bakkie (Toyota Hilux): R4,171
    • Hatchback (VW Polo Vivo 1.6): R4,338
    • Crossover (Suzuki Fronx): R3,743
  • Durban:
    • SUV (Toyota Corolla Cross): R2,314
    • Bakkie (Toyota Hilux): R2,173
    • Hatchback (VW Polo Vivo 1.6): R2,241
    • Crossover (Suzuki Fronx): R1,998

Driving becomes especially cost-effective for families, as the expenses remain unchanged regardless of the number of passengers.

Flying Costs
In contrast, airfare for round trips during the Christmas period has soared due to rising operational costs and increased holiday demand. Average return flight prices are:

  • Cape Town: R6,913
  • Durban: R4,169

Here’s a breakdown by airline:

  • Johannesburg to Cape Town:
    • CemAir: R6,858
    • FlySafair: R6,122
    • Lift: R6,950
    • Airlink: R6,268
    • SAA: R8,371
  • Johannesburg to Durban:
    • CemAir: R5,168
    • FlySafair: R3,822
    • Lift: R3,850
    • Airlink: R3,778
    • SAA: R4,231

Flying is undeniably faster, taking just a few hours compared to 6–15 hours of driving. However, for families or groups, the costs of multiple tickets add up quickly. For example, a family of four would spend over R23,000 on flights to Cape Town or R16,000 to Durban, significantly higher than the driving costs.

Why Driving is the Budget-Friendly Choice

Fuel Savings
With reduced petrol prices, driving is more affordable in 2024 than in previous years. Vehicles with efficient fuel consumption, such as crossovers or hatchbacks, further enhance savings.

Flexible Stops
Although the drive to Cape Town might require an overnight stop, the added cost is minimal compared to flight prices. Overnight stays can be planned economically, making driving a practical option for extended families or groups.

No Hidden Costs
Unlike flying, which often involves additional charges for luggage and airport parking, driving is straightforward and predictable in terms of expenses.

Flying: The Convenience Factor

While costlier, flying offers unparalleled convenience for those with tight schedules. The time saved is invaluable for solo travelers or professionals needing a quick getaway. However, during peak holiday seasons, delays and overbooked flights can diminish the appeal of air travel.

For the 2024 holiday season, driving is the clear winner for budget-conscious South Africans traveling from Johannesburg to Cape Town or Durban. With significantly lower costs, particularly for families and groups, it offers a practical and enjoyable alternative to the high prices of air travel. While flying remains attractive for its convenience and time efficiency, the affordability of road trips makes them the preferred choice for most holidaymakers this year.

Plan wisely and consider your budget, travel needs, and the joy of a scenic South African road trip when deciding between driving and flying this festive season!
