Kaizer Chiefs have received a timely squad boost ahead of their CAF Confederation Cup second preliminary round clash against AS Simba of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
With a place in the group stages up for grabs, Amakhosi are determined to recreate the magic of their memorable 2021 CAF Champions League run, when they reached the final before falling short against Egyptian giants Al Ahly.
Velebayi and Baartman Cleared to Play
The team’s preparations have been strengthened by the clearance of two key players, Asanele Velebayi and Luke Baartman, who are now eligible to represent Chiefs after a registration battle involving their former club, Cape Town Spurs.
Both players have officially been added to the Confederation Cup squad and are fit to compete for selection. The final call will rest with co-coaches Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze, who now have more tactical flexibility going into the clash.
Kaizer Chiefs: Gradual Return for Baartman
Baartman recently featured at the U20 FIFA World Cup, gaining valuable experience despite showing some rust from a lack of competitive game time. Chiefs are expected to ease him and Velebayi into the lineup gradually, allowing them to build full match fitness before taking on a more prominent role.
Vilakazi Adds More Firepower
Adding to the positive news, Mfundo Vilakazi has returned from the World Cup and is available for selection. His strong performances on the international stage could see him pushing hard for a regular spot in the starting XI, increasing the competition for places.

Kaizer Chiefs will face AS Simba in the first leg in Lubumbashi this Saturday, before hosting the return leg at Dobsonville Stadium on October 26.
A strong result away from home could be crucial to securing progression to the group stages and keeping their continental ambitions alive.
