Motorists across South Africa could soon enjoy some much-needed relief at the fuel pumps as international oil prices continue to decline. Early indications suggest that a significant petrol price reduction may be on the cards for November 2025.
Potential Price Reductions
According to preliminary data from the Central Energy Fund (CEF), the price of petrol could decrease by around 48 cents for 95 Unleaded and 51 cents for 93 Unleaded. Diesel users may also benefit, with a projected drop of about 10 cents per litre.
If these trends hold steady throughout the month, the cuts could deepen further up to 70 cents per litre for petrol and approximately 30 cents per litre for diesel.
Rand Strength and Oil Price Decline
The potential price drop is largely supported by a stronger rand and falling international oil prices. The rand, which recently strengthened to R17.17 against the US dollar, is now trading at R17.21, offering some breathing room for import costs.
Meanwhile, Brent Crude oil prices have fallen below $65 per barrel, before ticking slightly upwards after OPEC+ announced a production boost. This downward trend in oil prices is a key factor contributing to the anticipated local fuel price reductions.
A Year of Price Stability
Fuel costs have remained relatively stable throughout 2025, showing minimal fluctuations compared to previous years. In October, motorists experienced a modest eight-cent increase per litre for petrol far less than typical mid-year surges seen in the past.
This stability has been crucial in cushioning consumers from the broader effects of inflation and global market volatility.
Current Petrol Price
As of mid-October 2025:
- 95 Unleaded petrol is priced at R20.84 along the coast and R21.63 in Gauteng.
- 93 Unleaded petrol stands at R21.48, following a minor one-cent increase.
- Diesel prices have also been adjusted slightly, but remain close to their early-year levels.
Final adjustments for November’s fuel prices will be announced at the end of October. Should the current trajectory of oil prices and the rand continue, motorists can look forward to meaningful savings at the pump just in time for the festive season travel period.
This expected fuel price cut could ease financial pressure on households, reduce transport costs, and provide a small but welcome boost to the broader economy.
