Springboks head coach Rassie Erasmus has made a bold statement by implementing ten changes to his squad ahead of Saturday’s Rugby Championship rematch against the Wallabies in Cape Town. The adjustments come after South Africa suffered a heavy 38-22 defeat to Australia in Johannesburg, and Erasmus is determined to right the wrongs from their opening encounter.
Responding to Injuries and Form
Erasmus faces a challenging selection landscape, having already lost four key players to injury. Siya Kolisi, Pieter-Steph du Toit, Kurt-Lee Arendse, and Edwill van der Merwe are all sidelined, forcing the coach to rethink his options. While some selections, such as Handre Pollard at fly-half, were pre-planned, Erasmus admitted that last week’s loss heavily influenced the changes.
“We lost four players to injury last weekend, which obviously affected some of our selections. However, we also reviewed where we went wrong against Australia and made changes we believe will give us the edge in this game,” Erasmus explained.
Injury Returnees Bring Experience
Among the key changes, Damian de Allende and Cheslin Kolbe return from injury, adding vital experience to the backline. Their inclusion was deemed logical given their familiarity with the Wallabies and ability to stabilise the side.
The backline sees five changes overall, with only Grant Williams and captain Jesse Kriel retaining their spots. Pollard joins Williams at half-back, while De Allende partners Kriel in the centres. Kolbe slots into a back three alongside Canan Moodie and Willie le Roux, forming a dynamic attacking unit.
Changes Up Front
The forwards have also undergone a significant reshuffle. Ox Nche, Malcolm Marx, and Marco van Staden keep their positions in the pack, while Thomas du Toit is given a chance in the front row. RG Snyman and Ruan Nortje are selected at lock, with Franco Mostert and Jean-Luc du Preez completing the loose trio.
Erasmus emphasised the importance of squad depth, stating, “It will be good for a few players to experience facing one of the top teams in the world, especially as we continue to build our squad. We are determined to get things right this week.”
Strategic Bench Adjustments
South Africa has reverted to a 6-2 bench structure, with Marnus van der Merwe replacing Bongi Mbonambi as reserve hooker. Front-row cover is provided by Boan Venter and Wilco Louw, while seasoned campaigners Eben Etzebeth and Lood de Jager strengthen the replacements. Kwagga Smith, Cobus Reinach, and Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu complete the 23-man squad.
Erasmus is keen to see a marked improvement in standards after last week’s disappointing showing, particularly in the second half. “We let ourselves and the country down, so we have all the motivation we need to make things right this week,” he said.
