South African mixed martial arts sensation Dricus du Plessis may have fallen short in his bid to retain the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) middleweight title, but he is certainly not feeling the pinch. Over the weekend, Du Plessis lost his belt to Khamzat Chimaev of the United Arab Emirates at UFC 319, held at the United Centre in Chicago. Yet, despite the setback, the Stillknocks fighter walked away with a massive payday.

A Rewarding Night in Chicago

Just for stepping into the octagon at UFC 319, Du Plessis reportedly earned a staggering $3 million – which translates to over R52 million. According to Livemint.com, this payout included a base purse of $1 million for entering the fight as the reigning champion, with the remainder coming from Pay-Per-View (PPV) points and promotional bonuses, estimated between $1 million and $1.5 million. Had he managed to defend his title successfully, Du Plessis’ earnings would have grown by an additional $500,000, roughly R8.8 million.

Consistent Earnings from UFC Fights

This is not the first time Du Plessis has pocketed seven-figure sums for his UFC appearances. He reportedly earned $3.34 million (around R59 million) for his bout against Sean Strickland at UFC 312, and $1.9 million (approximately R21 million) for his fight with Israel Adesanya at UFC 305. His initial title-winning clash against Strickland at UFC 297 brought in around R7.6 million.

Across his last four UFC events, Du Plessis has amassed an estimated R138 million to R147 million. This remarkable rise is even more striking when compared to his early UFC fights, where he earned around $50,000 (over R880,000) per fight, including both show money and win bonuses. Notably, his fight against Robert Whittaker at UFC 290 reportedly earned him approximately $250,000 (R4.5 million).

Dricus du Plessis: A Five-Year Success Story

Over the past five years, Du Plessis’ consistent performances and growing reputation in the MMA world have seen him earn an estimated R160 million. While the defeat to Chimaev might sting in the short term, the financial rewards and his increasing global profile highlight that Du Plessis’ career trajectory remains firmly upwards.

Cementing South Africa’s MMA Legacy

Beyond the monetary gains, Du Plessis’ rising star in the UFC has positioned him as one of South Africa’s premier MMA exports. His skill inside the octagon, combined with his marketability and expanding fan base, has put him in line for even more lucrative opportunities and high-profile bouts in the future.

As his international appeal grows, so too does the potential for sponsorship deals, endorsements, and premium fight purses, all of which contribute to his financial stability and overall brand in the MMA world. Even with the loss, Du Plessis’ reputation as a formidable fighter remains intact, ensuring he continues to attract attention from fans and promoters alike.

Banking on the Future

Dricus du Plessis’ story demonstrates that in professional mixed martial arts, financial success is not solely determined by wins or losses. His strategic fight choices, high-profile matchups, and consistent performances have translated into substantial earnings, securing him a comfortable financial foundation while enhancing his global standing.

For Du Plessis, the future looks bright. Whether inside the octagon chasing another title or outside it capitalising on his growing brand, the South African fighter is proving that losses in the cage do not necessarily mean setbacks in life. With millions already in the bank and an ever-expanding international reputation, the Stillknocks fighter is poised for continued success – and bigger paydays – on the world stage.
