On Monday, July 1, 2025, the City of Ekurhuleni was shaken by the news of the tragic death of Mpho Mafole, the municipality’s head of forensic audits. Mafole was shot and killed while driving along the R23 highway in Kempton Park, Gauteng. The incident has left both the community and his colleagues devastated, and it has raised serious concerns about the safety of public servants.

Tragic Death of Mpho Mafole: What We Know So Far

Mafole, a well-respected official, was gunned down while travelling in his vehicle. According to Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, a spokesperson for the South African Police Service (SAPS), the attack occurred when Mafole was driving on the R23 road. At this point, police have not revealed the motive for the shooting, and investigations are still in the early stages.

“The victim was driving on the R23 road when he was shot by unknown suspect(s). The motive of the shooting is unknown at this stage, and police investigations continue,” Nevhuhulwi confirmed in a statement.

The death of Mafole, a key figure in the City of Ekurhuleni’s efforts to ensure transparency in local government, has left many wondering if his work may have been linked to this violent act. While no official statement has confirmed this, some speculate that the nature of his job, which often involved investigating financial irregularities, may have made him a target.

Investigation Underway as the City of Ekurhuleni Responds

In the wake of the tragedy, the City of Ekurhuleni has vowed to fully cooperate with the police to help resolve the case. Phakamile Mbengashe, the city’s head of communications, expressed his condolences and assured both the public and municipal staff that every effort would be made to bring the perpetrators to justice.

In a letter to staff, Mbengashe stated, “The City of Ekurhuleni is committed to assisting in every way possible with the ongoing investigation. Our priority is ensuring the safety and well-being of our employees, and we will provide additional support where needed during this difficult time.” He also confirmed that all security protocols were being reviewed and reinforced.

As the investigation continues, the police have urged anyone with information about the crime to come forward. However, as of now, no suspects have been arrested.

Could Mpho Mafole’s Work Have Played a Role in His Murder?

While the investigation is still in its early stages, many are asking whether Mafole’s role as a forensic auditor could have been a factor in his murder. Forensic auditors play a crucial role in identifying corruption and financial mismanagement within both the public and private sectors. South Africa has a history of public officials being targeted due to their work in exposing unethical practices, and some believe that Mafole may have faced similar risks.

Given the nature of his work, which often involved scrutinising financial records for signs of fraud or corruption, it’s possible that Mafole may have unearthed sensitive information that could have made him a target. While these are merely speculations at this point, the question remains one of the central concerns surrounding his death.

Remembering Mpho Mafole’s Legacy

Throughout his career, Mafole was known for his unwavering dedication to ensuring that public funds were used responsibly. As head of forensic audits, he was instrumental in upholding financial accountability within the City of Ekurhuleni. His death is not just a personal tragedy for his family, but a significant loss for the city, especially in the ongoing fight for good governance and transparency.

Phakamile Mbengashe, the city’s spokesperson, also acknowledged Mafole’s contributions: “Mpho was a dedicated public servant whose work in promoting accountability and transparency will not be forgotten. His passing is a huge loss to both his colleagues and the community he served.“

The murder of Mpho Mafole has raised important questions about the safety of public officials in South Africa, especially those working to expose corruption and ensure accountability. As the investigation unfolds, the hope is that the authorities will find those responsible and bring them to justice.

The City of Ekurhuleni, along with Mpho Mafole’s family, friends, and colleagues, continues to mourn the loss of an individual who was committed to improving the lives of others through his work. The case serves as a tragic reminder of the risks faced by those who fight for integrity in governance.
