Six-Hour Power Cuts and Cold Weather Ahead – Here’s Where and When Load Reduction Will Hit Gauteng Residents This June

Load Reduction Schedule: As winter tightens its grip across Gauteng, residents are being urged to brace themselves for more than just frosty mornings. Eskom has released its latest load reduction schedule for the remainder of June 2025, and the message is clear: expect extended power cuts during peak hours, particularly in areas directly serviced by the utility.

This isn’t your average load shedding. Unlike national load shedding, which is based on electricity generation shortfalls, Eskom’s load reduction is a targeted intervention aimed at reducing strain on the grid in areas with high consumption and rampant illegal connections. These cuts are expected to last up to six hours during peak periods.

A Look at the Peak-Hour Power Cuts

Eskom’s load reduction plan is in place from Monday through Sunday, offering residents a level of predictability. Morning cuts typically run from 5am to 9am, while evening cuts extend from 5pm to 10pm—when heating appliances and geysers are in full swing.

According to Eskom Gauteng spokesperson Amanda Qithi, the schedule is essential to protect infrastructure from overloading and to manage grid stability in high-risk zones.

Add a Cold Front to the Mix

As if the power cuts weren’t enough, weather forecasts predict freezing temperatures this week.

  • Johannesburg: As low as -2°C, peaking at a chilly 11°C
  • Pretoria: Dipping to 0°C, with highs only around 13°C

So, if you’re living in an affected zone, layer up and charge those devices in advance.

Affected Areas Under Load Reduction

Here’s a breakdown of the major zones affected under Eskom’s current load reduction schedule:

Morning (5am–9am):

  • Jabavu (Soweto)
  • Dobsonville
  • Meadowlands (parts)
  • Orange Farm (extensions)
  • Diepkloof
  • Other informal settlements

Evening (5pm–10pm):

  • Moroka
  • Chiawelo
  • Kagiso
  • Khutsong
  • Tsakane
  • Tembisa
  • Morogoro
  • Further extensions of Soweto & Orange Farm

Additional Hotspots:

  • Ga-Rankuwa
  • Sebokeng
  • Mabopane (including Part 19 SP)
  • Diepsloot

What’s the Difference Between Eskom and City Power?

While Eskom continues to enforce load reduction, City Power has suspended its own programme indefinitely. But don’t get too comfortable—City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena warns that if electricity demand spikes or tampering resurfaces, the utility may reinstate load reduction at any time.

In essence, if Eskom is your provider, expect cuts. If City Power is, stay alert but cautiously optimistic.

Winter Prep Tips During Load Reduction

  • Keep battery-powered lighting and devices fully charged
  • Limit high-consumption appliances like heaters during peak periods
  • Invest in thermal blankets, gas heaters, or hot water bottles
  • Know your load reduction schedule and plan evening activities accordingly
