South Africa has entered a bold new chapter in sustainable transportation with the launch of XPress, an electric vehicle-powered courier service that is revolutionising last-mile delivery in the country. This pioneering initiative not only pushes the envelope for eco-friendly logistics but also signals a significant step forward in the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) for commercial use. The rise of EVs in South Africa marks a commitment to greener practices and innovative solutions.
The XPress courier service is the brainchild of Alex Staniland, who founded the venture to address logistical challenges experienced by his smart home retail company, mUther. Frustrated by inconsistent service levels from traditional courier firms, Staniland envisioned a more efficient, reliable, and green solution — thus, XPress was born.
As more companies embrace EVs, the logistics landscape is transforming, paving the way for a sustainable future.

Powered by Electric Innovation
Operating exclusively with a fleet of three BYD Dolphin electric vehicles, XPress currently services the Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and Limpopo provinces. Each delivery costs R99 and accommodates packages weighing up to 30kg. The company guarantees next-day delivery for bookings made before 10:00 a.m., with full parcel tracking available via the XPress website.
XPress is reportedly using the extended-range BYD Dolphin model, capable of delivering over 400km on a single charge. This EV features a powerful 150kW motor with 310Nm of torque and a driving range of up to 427km, making it ideal for regional courier operations.

Bringing Deliveries to the People
What truly sets XPress apart is its Bring It feature. This unique service allows anyone to initiate a delivery by simply scanning a QR code displayed on any XPress vehicle they spot on the road. The link takes them to a booking portal where they can arrange and pay for a delivery immediately. The driver then picks up the parcel on the spot and delivers it directly to the destination — a convenience-focused approach rarely seen in courier services.
Importantly, XPress is not limited to mUther customers; it’s open to all users, democratizing access to a greener, faster delivery solution.
Staniland has ambitious plans for the future. Discussions are already underway to expand XPress to other major South African cities, including Durban, Cape Town, and Nelspruit. The company also aims to scale its fleet with more EVs tailored for intra-city deliveries, further reducing its carbon footprint.

Inside the XPress EVs
Though already impressive in stock form, the BYD Dolphins used by XPress have been customized for delivery use. The passenger and rear seats have been removed, transforming the hatchbacks into efficient panel vans with optimal cargo space.
Despite these modifications, the vehicles still boast a suite of advanced features such as adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alerts, blind-spot detection, automatic emergency braking, and driver fatigue monitoring. Comfort and usability are also top-notch, thanks to a rotating 12.8-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, digital instrumentation, and climate control.
A Glimpse into the Future
With XPress, South Africa is witnessing a promising intersection of electric mobility and smart logistics. This innovative model could very well redefine how courier services operate, not just locally but globally. As demand for cleaner, faster delivery options grows, XPress stands poised at the forefront of a green logistics revolution.
In a world hungry for sustainable solutions, South Africa’s XPress service is delivering more than just parcels — it’s delivering the future.
