Gauteng police captain faces serious rape charges involving a female trainee, raising concerns within the SAPS.
In a shocking incident that has rattled the SAPS community, a 59-year-old Gauteng police captain, employed as a firearms trainer at the Tshwane Police Academy in Pretoria West, appeared in the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday. The veteran officer, who has served in the police force for an astounding 31 years, is accused of raping a 20-year-old female police trainee.
Allegations That Shook the Community
According to Lumka Mahanjana, the regional spokesperson for the National Prosecution Authority (NPA), the incident allegedly took place in April 2025. The complainant reportedly walked past the accused without saluting him, leading to a reprimand from the officer. Although the trainee explained that she had not noticed him, the tension did not end there.
On May 6, while walking with her platoon to the bungalows, the trainee was allegedly summoned to the captain’s office. Once inside, the police captain reportedly closed the door and threatened to dismiss her for not greeting him—unless she complied with his demand to sleep with him. It is alleged that he forced her to partially undress, while he also half undressed, and then raped her before instructing her to get dressed and leave.
Immediate Response and Investigation
Following the harrowing incident, the trainee courageously reported the matter to the authorities at the academy. The police were contacted, and the complainant received medical attention before being referred to the Laudium Thuthuzela Care Centre for further support.
The alleged perpetrator was arrested the very next day, on May 7, and the case was handed over to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) for thorough investigation.
Legal Proceedings and Bail Application
The accused appeared in court on Wednesday, where the matter was postponed until May 23, following objections to his bail application. The court’s decision has drawn mixed reactions from the community, with many expressing concern over the severity of the allegations and the potential breach of trust within SAPS ranks.
SAPS Under Scrutiny
This incident comes at a time when public trust in law enforcement is already fragile. The SAPS community is reportedly in shock, with calls for stricter measures to address misconduct within the force. The IPID’s involvement underscores the gravity of the allegations, as the police captain’s long tenure raises questions about internal accountability and oversight.
A Call for Justice
As the legal process unfolds, there is a growing demand for justice for the victim and accountability for those who betray the public’s trust. The upcoming court proceedings on May 23 will undoubtedly be closely watched by the community, as the SAPS continues to face scrutiny over the conduct of its members.
