Volkswagen is set to make the Golf more accessible to South African motorists with the introduction of the TSI range. Until now, the eighth-generation VW Golf was only available in the high-performance GTI and R models. However, the arrival of four new VW Golf TSI variants will bring a more affordable entry point to the lineup.
New VW Golf TSI Variants and Pricing
The Golf TSI range, set to launch before the end of March, includes the Life, Life +, R-Line, and R-Line + models. Prices for these versions range from R580,900 for the base model to R688,100 for the top-tier R-Line +. This is a significant reduction in the Golf’s entry-level cost, considering the GTI currently retails for R853,400 – making the TSI models up to R272,500 cheaper.
Under the hood, the Golf TSI models are powered by a 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 110kW and 250Nm. The engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox, delivering an average fuel consumption of 5.2l/100km.

VW Golf TSI Features and Equipment
Each variant comes with a range of features. The Golf Life includes LED headlights, 16-inch alloy wheels, a multifunction steering wheel, cruise control, a six-speaker audio system, air conditioning, and a 12.9-inch infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The Life + offers additional comforts such as a customizable driver profile, rearview camera, 30-colour ambient lighting, and Art-Velour sports seats.
For a sportier experience, the R-Line variant includes a heated steering wheel with paddle shifters, sports suspension, three-zone climate control, keyless entry, 17-inch alloy wheels, and R-Line branded seats.
The top-end R-Line + comes with even more premium features, including IQ Matrix LED headlights, an illuminated VW badge, 18-inch alloy wheels, a power-adjustable driver seat, heated and ventilated front seats, leather upholstery, and stainless-steel pedals.

What Salary Do You Need?
Using a standard finance calculation, monthly repayments for the new VW Golf TSI range from R12,725 for the Life to R15,056 for the R-Line +. These figures are based on a five-year loan term with an 11% interest rate and no deposit or balloon payment.
Financial experts advise that car payments should not exceed 20% of your gross monthly income. This means that to afford the Golf TSI on finance, you should earn:
- Golf Life: R63,625 per month
- Golf Life +: R67,140 per month
- Golf R-Line: R71,010 per month
- Golf R-Line +: R75,280 per month

It is important to note that these calculations do not include insurance, fuel, or maintenance costs, all of which must be considered when budgeting for a new vehicle.
