Final SASSA SRD Payment Dates for March 2025
SASSA has confirmed that the last round of SRD grant payments will be processed from Wednesday, March 26, to Friday, March 28, 2025. This announcement has sparked concern among beneficiaries, as the grant—initially introduced as a temporary measure during the COVID-19 pandemic—has been extended multiple times over the years.
Government Delays Confirmation of SRD Grant Extension
Despite ongoing public reliance on the SRD grant, government authorities, including SASSA and the National Treasury, have yet to confirm whether the grant will continue into April 2025. The delay in the Budget Speech and ongoing discussions about VAT increases have added to the uncertainty, leaving many South Africans in financial limbo.
2025 SASSA SRD Investigation Findings
An independent investigation into SASSA SRD security vulnerabilities has uncovered widespread fraud, identity theft, and corruption. In response, acting SASSA CEO Themba Matlou acknowledged weaknesses in the system and announced several measures to enhance security:
- Reducing multiple applications per number (limiting applicants to one per phone number).
- Implementing real-time system monitoring to detect fraudulent activity.
- Expanding biometric verification to prevent identity fraud.
- Enhancing cybersecurity by upgrading firewall protections and securing webserver files.
Since the audit, SASSA has reportedly detected and stopped over 1,650 identity theft attempts, which have been reported to law enforcement.
What’s Next for the SRD Grant?
Social Development Minister Sisisi Tolashe, who initiated the investigation, has yet to make an official statement regarding the long-term future of the grant. However, SASSA has outlined potential long-term improvements, including:
- Mandatory biometric verification for all online transactions.
- Faster and more secure software development processes.
- More frequent internal and external audits.
