Cape Town City FC has officially secured the signing of Thulani Serero, marking the legendary midfielder’s long-awaited return to South African football. The 34-year-old, affectionately known as “Cream,” has spent over a decade playing abroad, with stints at Ajax Amsterdam, Vitesse Arnhem, Al-Jazira, and Khor Fakkan. After leaving Khor Fakkan more than a year ago, Serero is now back in the country, ready to re-enter the top flight of South African football.
A Legendary Journey Abroad
Serero’s football journey began in the heart of Soweto, where he first made a name for himself at Ajax Cape Town (now Cape Town Spurs) in 2008. His exceptional performances earned him a move to Ajax Amsterdam in 2011, where he spent six years. Throughout his career abroad, Serero amassed an impressive collection of silverware, including three Eredivisie titles with Ajax, a Dutch Super Cup, and several honours in the UAE Pro League, including the UAE Cup and UAE Super Cup.
In addition to his club successes, Serero also earned 41 caps for Bafana Bafana, solidifying his position as a key player for South Africa. His last season in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) saw him sweep individual awards, including PSL Footballer of the Year, Player of the Season, Players’ Player of the Season, and ABSA Premiership Red Hot Young Player.
A Warm Welcome Back to South Africa
Serero’s return is a momentous occasion for Cape Town City, and the club expressed their excitement with a heartfelt statement: “Cape Town City Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of Thulani Serero, marking his monumental return to South Africa’s top flight. Welcome home, Cream.”
The midfielder has been training with the club for the past two weeks, and head coach Muhsin Ertugral is eager to utilise Serero’s vast experience in guiding the team through the remainder of the 2024/25 Betway Premiership season. With the club currently sitting 10th in the league standings, the addition of Serero is expected to boost their chances of finishing higher up the table.
A Rich Career of Achievements
Serero’s achievements on the international stage speak volumes about his quality and pedigree. During his time in the Netherlands, he won three Eredivisie titles with Ajax and represented the club in the prestigious UEFA Champions League. He also enjoyed success with Al Jazira, winning the league title in the 2020/21 season.
In South Africa, Serero’s contributions to Ajax Cape Town were recognised with multiple accolades, including the PSL Footballer of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year awards. His impressive performances in the PSL cemented his reputation as one of South Africa’s most talented players.
What’s Next for Thulani Serero and Cape Town City
The veteran midfielder now looks forward to a fresh challenge in the Betway Premiership. Cape Town City’s next fixture will see them face AmaZulu FC at King Zwelithini Stadium in Durban on Sunday, 2 March 2025. With Serero’s wealth of experience, he will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in helping the team achieve their goals for the season.
Cape Town City’s supporters can now look forward to the return of one of South Africa’s footballing legends. As the club aims for a strong finish in the league, Serero’s leadership and skill will be invaluable in their pursuit of success. Welcome home, Thulani Serero.
