City Power, Johannesburg’s electricity supply service, announced the outage as a necessary measure for essential maintenance work on its electricity network. This outage is aimed at improving and maintaining the infrastructure that supports electricity distribution to the affected suburbs.
While power will be unavailable during the scheduled time, City Power has cautioned residents that electricity could be restored earlier than planned. They have urged all customers to treat their electrical supply points as live, regardless of the outage status, to ensure safety during this period.
The city has also issued an apology to residents for any inconvenience the planned outage may cause and appreciates their understanding while this important maintenance work is being carried out.

Illegal Connections in Kew
In recent news, City Power uncovered illegal connections in the Kew area, which included 800 kilograms of cable and 110 meters of streetlight cable. Additionally, 63 circuit breakers that were illegally supplying single-phase households were confiscated.
These illegal connections not only jeopardize the integrity of the power grid but also pose significant safety risks. City Power has been taking action to clamp down on these unauthorized connections to ensure the stability and safety of the electricity network.
Energy-Saving Tips
While dealing with the power outage, Johannesburg residents can also use this time to reduce their electricity consumption and save on energy costs. Here are some effective energy-saving tips that can help lower electricity bills:
- Switch to Energy-Efficient Lighting: Replace incandescent bulbs with energy-efficient CFLs or LEDs, which consume less power and last longer.
- Optimize Geyser Use: Use cold water for quick tasks like washing hands and install basin plugs to prevent excessive water use.
- Maintain Your Swimming Pool: Reduce energy usage by cleaning pool filters regularly and reducing the filtration cycle during cooler months.
- Wash Laundry Smartly: Only use the washing machine for full loads to minimize power usage, and consider drying clothes naturally in the sun.
- Use a Kettle Instead of a Stove: When boiling water, use a kettle instead of the stove to save energy.
- Defrost Food Naturally: Defrost frozen food naturally by leaving it out ahead of time rather than using a microwave.
These simple changes can significantly help reduce electricity consumption and contribute to lower monthly utility bills.
As Johannesburg prepares for an eight-hour power outage on 11 February 2025, residents are urged to take necessary precautions and plan ahead for the scheduled maintenance. While City Power works on upgrading its network, residents are encouraged to follow energy-saving practices and keep an eye on updates from City Power regarding any changes to the outage schedule.
