University Fees 2025

South Africa is home to over 20 public universities, many of which rank among the world’s top tertiary institutions. As students gear up for 2025, understanding tuition costs is crucial for planning an academic journey. Tuition fees vary based on the university, type of degree, and duration of the course. Here’s a comprehensive guide to what students can expect to pay and how South Africa’s universities measure up globally.

South Africa’s Universities in Global Rankings

According to Times Higher Education’s latest rankings, 14 South African universities are recognized among the world’s top tertiary institutions for 2024. These rankings evaluate institutions on teaching quality, research environment, research quality, industry partnerships, and international outlook.

The University of Cape Town (UCT) remains South Africa’s top-rated university, although it slipped in global rankings from 167th to 180th. Other universities, such as the University of Pretoria and North-West University, also saw declines, with both falling into lower performance brackets. Despite this, two institutions—Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University and the University of Fort Hare—entered the global rankings for the first time.

Tuition Fees at South Africa’s Public Universities

Studying in South Africa is significantly more affordable compared to international options. While studying abroad often costs over R200,000 annually just for living expenses, public universities provide a high-quality education for a fraction of the cost. Below is a breakdown of estimated tuition fees for 2025 across some of the country’s top universities.

Note: These figures are estimates based on available data. Additional costs, such as textbooks, travel, and accommodation, are not included.

Key Factors Affecting University Costs

  1. Degree Type and Modules:
Tuition fees are often calculated per module. Programs with more intensive requirements, such as engineering or science degrees, tend to cost more than humanities-focused courses.
  2. Institutional Rankings and Resources:
Universities with higher global rankings, like UCT and Stellenbosch, often have higher tuition fees due to their resources, research output, and reputation.
  3. Accommodation and Living Costs:
While tuition is a significant portion of the expense, students should also budget for residence and daily living costs. For example, residence fees at some institutions can range from R30,000 to R50,000 annually.
  4. Financial Aid and Scholarships:
Many universities provide bursaries, loans, and scholarships to support students who may struggle to afford tuition. NSFAS (National Student Financial Aid Scheme) remains a key funding option for many South Africans.

Why Study in South Africa?

For students seeking quality education without the exorbitant costs of studying abroad, South Africa offers a viable solution. Public universities provide globally recognized qualifications, often at half the cost of studying in countries like the USA, UK, or Australia. This affordability, combined with the chance to stay close to home and learn in a diverse, multicultural environment, makes South Africa’s universities an attractive choice.

As university fees for 2025 are set to rise, prospective students must carefully evaluate their options and budget accordingly. South Africa’s public universities remain some of the most affordable institutions for quality education, but costs vary significantly depending on the program and institution.

Whether you’re pursuing a Bachelor of Arts, Science, or Engineering, planning ahead and exploring financial aid opportunities will help you make the most of your academic journey. With the right preparation, students can enjoy both affordability and excellence in their higher education experience.
