Stay Safe with Insights into High-Risk Areas and Preventative Measures

Vehicle-related crimes, including hijackings, smash-and-grabs, and car theft, continue to rise in South Africa, leaving drivers increasingly vulnerable. A recent report from Cartrack highlights six critical hijacking hotspots, underscoring the importance of awareness and vigilance to safeguard lives and vehicles.

The 6 New Hijacking Hotspots

1. Border Areas Near Zimbabwe and Mozambique

Organized crime syndicates exploit South Africa’s porous borders to smuggle stolen vehicles. Rural Limpopo, in particular, is a prime target due to weak border security. Vehicles stolen here often disappear across the border within hours.

2. Remote Areas in the Free State

Sparse population density and limited law enforcement presence make the Free State’s rural regions susceptible to hijackings. Economic challenges in these areas further fuel the rise in car-related crimes.

3. Johannesburg CBD

The densely populated city centre provides cover for criminals amidst chaotic traffic and crowded streets. Hijackers often exploit the confusion to target unsuspecting drivers.

4. Durban Central

As one of South Africa’s busiest urban hubs, Durban Central frequently sees car thefts and hijackings. High traffic volumes and economic pressures in the region exacerbate these crimes.

5. Nelspruit

The capital of Mpumalanga has emerged as a hotspot for vehicle crime. High-traffic zones and economic struggles make Nelspruit a challenging area for drivers.

6. Kimberley City

Unemployment and economic hardship in the Northern Cape city of Kimberley contribute to increasing car-related crimes. Drivers in the area are urged to stay alert and take preventative measures.

When and Where You’re Most at Risk

  • Driveways and Gates: Hijackers target drivers returning home, especially when gates are left open.
  • Highway Congestion: Traffic jams provide opportunities for criminals to strike.
  • Peak Hours: Early morning (6:00 AM) and midday (lunch breaks) are peak times for hijackings, according to Arrive Alive.

Top Vehicle Models Targeted

Data reveals that certain vehicle models are most sought after by hijackers:

  • BMW 3 Series
  • Ford Ranger
  • Toyota models (Hilux, Fortuner, Corolla, and others)
  • VW Polo (especially hatchbacks)
  • Nissan NP200 and Almera

Many of these vehicles are in high demand across South Africa and neighbouring countries, making them prime targets.

Tips to Stay Safe

  1. Vary Your Routine: Avoid predictable driving patterns.
  2. Stay Alert: Be vigilant in high-traffic areas and when approaching your driveway.
  3. Secure Your Vehicle: Invest in tracking systems and anti-hijacking technology.
  4. Avoid High-Risk Areas: Use safer routes whenever possible.
  5. Prompt Action: Close gates immediately upon entering your property.

Final Thoughts

The rise in hijackings in South Africa underscores the need for drivers to remain informed and prepared. By staying vigilant and understanding the risks associated with these hotspots, you can take steps to protect yourself and your vehicle.

Stay safe on the roads, and remember, your safety is paramount!
