Student Insurance: Why Students Need Insurance for Gadgets and Textbooks
SHARE

As the 2025 academic year approaches, university students across the country are gearing up for another year of learning and growth. While tuition fees, living expenses, and study materials are top priorities for many students and their parents, there is another essential aspect often overlooked: student insurance. University life is filled with the potential for unexpected incidents, such as theft, damage, or loss of valuable possessions. For students who rely on expensive electronic devices and textbooks, ensuring these items are covered by insurance is crucial.

The Importance of Insurance for Students

Students depend on their belongings for both academic and personal use. High-value items, such as laptops, smartphones, bicycles, and even cars, play an integral role in daily student life. With these essential tools come significant risks. According to Karen Rimmer, head of distribution at PSG Insure, “it is critical to make sure everything is properly covered.” The reality is that items such as laptops and smartphones are vulnerable to theft, accidents, and even natural disasters, making it vital for students and parents to have appropriate insurance coverage.

Gadgets and Electronics: Today’s students rely on their gadgets more than ever. Laptops, smartphones, and tablets have become the backbone of academic life. From conducting research and writing assignments to staying connected with friends and family, these devices are indispensable. However, with the heavy reliance on electronics comes the risk of them being lost, damaged, or stolen. Replacing a laptop or smartphone can be expensive, and without insurance, students may find themselves with a hefty financial burden.

Textbooks and Study Materials: Textbooks are another significant investment for students. With rising costs of educational materials, many students spend hundreds or even thousands of rands on books for each semester. These resources are vital for academic success and should be protected against loss or damage. Insurance coverage can provide peace of mind, knowing that if something happens to these important materials, they will be replaced or reimbursed.

Sasria Cover: Essential for Unforeseen Events

One of the critical aspects of student insurance is ensuring that it includes coverage for risks that standard policies may exclude. Rimmer emphasizes the importance of including Sasria cover, especially when it comes to theft or damage resulting from riots, strikes, or public disorder. Sasria is a specialized insurance provider that covers losses caused by civil unrest, which is often not included in traditional insurance policies. This coverage is particularly relevant in today’s climate, where protests or political disturbances can lead to unexpected losses.

Understanding Policy Exclusions

It is equally important for students and their parents to be aware of policy exclusions, such as damage caused by negligence or theft from unsecured locations. Many insurance policies may not cover items that are left unattended in public areas or in places that are not locked or secured. This can pose a problem for students who may leave their gadgets or textbooks in common areas or in vehicles that are not adequately secured.

Rimmer advises students and parents to review their policies carefully and understand what is covered and what is excluded. While students may be covered under their parents’ home insurance, there may still be gaps in coverage. Understanding the fine print and consulting with an insurance adviser can help avoid costly mistakes.

Insurance for Students’ Vehicles and Bicycles

For students who own cars or bicycles, insurance is crucial. A student’s vehicle may face new risks once they move to university, especially if the car is no longer parked in a secure garage. Changes in location, such as moving to another province, can affect the type of coverage a car needs. “These updates are essential to communicate to your adviser so that cover can be amended accordingly,” says Rimmer. It is vital to ensure that a vehicle is comprehensively insured, including for theft and accidents.

Similarly, bicycles, which are often used by students for commuting, can be expensive and vulnerable to theft. Bicycles vary significantly in value, and students should ensure they are covered for the correct amount. Many policies may have specific requirements to keep coverage active, such as securing the bike in a locked area when not in use. It’s important for students to communicate these details with their insurance provider to ensure proper coverage.

Coverage for Personal Belongings and Textbooks

In addition to electronic devices and vehicles, students have many other valuable personal items, such as clothing, furniture, and textbooks. While some of these items may be covered under a parent’s policy, it is crucial to update the policy with the student’s new address. This ensures that belongings are properly covered while the student is living away from home. For many students, this can be a cost-effective way to protect personal property without taking out a separate insurance policy.

For students living in on-campus accommodation, the university is typically responsible for structural damages caused by events like fire or flood. However, for students renting off-campus housing, the insurance requirements may differ. In these cases, contents-only insurance is usually sufficient to cover personal belongings, but the specifics can vary depending on the terms of the lease agreement.

The Peace of Mind That Insurance Provides

Although student insurance might not seem like the most exciting aspect of university life, it provides invaluable protection against unforeseen disruptions. With so much to focus on—studies, social life, and extracurricular activities—students shouldn’t have to worry about the potential loss of essential gadgets or textbooks. With the right insurance policy, students and their parents can rest easy knowing that if the unexpected happens, their valuable belongings will be protected.

“University life should focus on learning and growth, not worrying about theft, accidents, or unpredictable events,” says Rimmer. For students unsure about how to insure their belongings, consulting an insurance adviser is a good place to start. Understanding the importance of insurance and having the right coverage can help students navigate university life with peace of mind, knowing they are prepared for whatever comes their way.

As students prepare for university life, it’s crucial not to overlook the importance of student insurance. From laptops and smartphones to bicycles and vehicles, students rely on a variety of valuable items to succeed in their academic journey. By ensuring these items are adequately covered, students and their parents can avoid costly setbacks and focus on the excitement and challenges of university life. Whether it’s checking for Sasria cover, understanding policy exclusions, or ensuring comprehensive coverage for personal belongings, insurance plays a pivotal role in safeguarding students’ assets. Don’t let the unexpected derail your studies—invest in student insurance and protect your future.
