Petrol Price from February 7th

The Automobile Association (AA) is predicting a significant increase in the petrol price from February 7th, 2024. This has been confirmed by the Central Energy Fund’s first media release for the year. According to the statement released on February 2nd, the costs of petrol, diesel, and illuminating paraffin are set to go up at midnight.

The Rise in the Petrol Price from February 7th Will Put Pressure on Household Budgets

The price for both the 93- and 95-octane unleaded petrol will rise by 75c per litre, diesel will experience 70c and 73c per litre for the low- and high-sulphur grades respectively, and paraffin will go up 71c per litre. This should put some pressure on the wallets of motorists given that this would be the first price hike in the last three months, after a welcome festive season break.

In the period between the 28th of December and the 1st of February, the dollar became more expensive for South Africans (increasing from R18,66 to R18,77), resulting in a higher national petrol price.

Higher Than Expected Petrol Price Increase

The AA anticipated an increase in the petrol price from February 7th of between 64c and 66c per litre, a rise in diesel prices by 63c per litre, and a 47c per litre cost to paraffin.

The AA said: “We again urge consumers to monitor their fuel usage carefully, and to budget according to the new fuel prices which come into effect on Wednesday. Ensuring vehicles are well maintained and in good mechanical condition, carefully planning routes, and avoiding heavy traffic, if possible, are some ways in which motorists can ensure better fuel consumption.”

More Ways to Save Money on Petrol

Managing Driving Habits:

  • Adopt smooth and steady driving: Avoid harsh acceleration, sudden braking, and speeding. Maintain a consistent speed below 100km/h for optimal fuel efficiency.
  • Plan your trips: Combine errands into one trip and avoid unnecessary journeys. Consider carpooling or using public transport when possible.
  • Reduce idling: Switch off your engine if you’re stopped for more than 30 seconds.
  • Minimise weight: Remove unnecessary items from your car to reduce fuel consumption.
  • Use cruise control: This helps maintain a consistent speed and can save fuel on highways.

Staying on Top of Vehicle Maintenance:

  • Regular servicing: Ensure your car is serviced regularly according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. This includes oil changes, air filter replacements, and spark plug checks.
  • Proper tire pressure: Maintain the correct tire pressure as recommended by your car’s manual. Underinflated tires can increase fuel consumption.
  • Air conditioning: Use air conditioning sparingly. Open windows for fresh air when possible, especially at lower speeds.

Trying Theses Fuel Efficiency Measures:

  • Choose to travel in a fuel-efficient car: When driving often or for long distances, consider the vehicle’s fuel economy rating. Smaller, lighter vehicles tend to be more fuel-efficient.
  • Use the right fuel: Consult your car’s manual for the recommended fuel octane rating. Using a higher-octane fuel than necessary won’t improve fuel economy.
  • Fuel rewards programs: Enrol in loyalty programs offered by fuel stations or grocery stores to earn discounts on fuel purchases.
  • Consider alternative fuels: Explore options like compressed natural gas (CNG) or electric vehicles if feasible for your needs and budget.

Additional Tips:

  • Shop around for fuel: Compare prices at different fuel stations before filling up. Consider using apps or websites that track fuel prices in your area.
  • Avoid peak-hour traffic: Congestion can significantly increase fuel consumption. If possible, travel during off-peak hours.
  • Optimise your route: Use navigation apps to find the most fuel-efficient route to your destination.

An increase in the petrol price from February 7th may be an expensive way to start the year. But by implementing some cost-saving tips, South African motorists can save money on fuel and contribute to a more sustainable environment. Remember, even small changes in driving habits and vehicle maintenance can make a significant difference.
