Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has fiercely defended his decision to recall striker Evidence Makgopa to the national team, despite mounting public criticism.
The Orlando Pirates forward was called up to replace the injured Iqraam Rayners for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Zimbabwe and Rwanda. Broos was quick to remind critics that while Makgopa “is not Messi or Ronaldo,” his role in the team goes far beyond goals.
Makgopa’s surprise return sparks debate
Makgopa was left out of Broos’s final 23-man squad two weeks ago after making the preliminary list. His sudden recall on Wednesday raised eyebrows, with many fans and analysts expecting in-form Sekhukhune United striker Bradley Grobler to be called up instead.
However, Broos has long trusted the 25-year-old, who played a crucial role in Bafana’s bronze-medal finish at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Speaking to the media in Durban, the coach made it clear he felt no obligation to justify his selection.
“I don’t think I have to explain what Makgopa can or cannot do,” said Broos. “When we went to AFCON two years ago, everyone was questioning his place in the team — but he proved his worth.”

While Makgopa has had a modest start to the current season scoring once and providing three assists in six matches Broos highlighted the striker’s ability to link up play and create opportunities for teammates.
“Many people underestimate Makgopa. He is not Messi, and he is not Ronaldo, I know that,” Broos added. “But he is a guy who can be very helpful to the team, and he showed that at AFCON.”
The Belgian tactician emphasized his unwavering faith in the young striker, insisting that recalling him was an easy decision.
“When Iqraam had to leave the camp, I didn’t hesitate to call back Evidence because I know that if we need him, he will deliver for us,” he concluded.
A chance to silence the critics
Makgopa will now have the opportunity to respond to his critics on the pitch when Bafana Bafana take on Zimbabwe on Friday evening at Moses Mabhida Stadium. Kick-off is at 18:00.
For Broos, the decision is clear Makgopa may not have the star power of global icons, but he brings qualities the coach values when it matters most.
