Chinese bakkie maker Jiangling Motors Corporation (JMC) has confirmed its return to South Africa, with the launch of the updated Vigus bakkie scheduled for November 2025. This marks the brand’s comeback after it exited the local market several years ago due to sluggish sales.
The company revealed in July that it would re-enter South Africa with a range of light and heavy commercial vehicles, including two new pickups. The Vigus, which was previously sold locally, has been significantly revamped for its relaunch.
Affordable Workhorse Entry
The new Vigus will debut as a single cab, targeted primarily at commercial fleets and budget-conscious buyers. JMC has confirmed that double cab variants are on the way, expected in early 2026.
Pricing is expected to start around R300,000, putting the Vigus firmly in the sub-R350,000 bracket where demand for reliable workhorses remains strong. If confirmed, this would make it one of the five most affordable single cabs in South Africa, behind the Ashok Leyland, Suzuki Super Carry, Mahindra Bolero, and Mahindra Pik Up.

Chinese Bakkie: Engine & Performance
Powering the Vigus is a 2.4-litre turbocharged diesel engine sourced from Ford, a result of the strategic partnership between the two manufacturers. This unit delivers 103kW and 310Nm, paired with a five-speed manual transmission that drives the rear wheels.
While JMC has not confirmed an automatic or 4×4 option, these are unlikely at launch given the vehicle’s positioning as an entry-level workhorse. The company has also hinted at “solid towing capability,” though exact figures have not yet been disclosed.
The Vigus and other JMC models will be distributed locally by Salvador Caetano Auto South Africa. Managing Director Leslie Ramsoomar emphasized the partnership’s vision of delivering “trusted, high-performance mobility solutions” tailored for the South African market.
